Need help with moving. (Tulsa OK Area)
06/17/2023 | acad1228

Hey, folks. A culmination of sad events leads me to asking for help. A few months ago my landlord asked us to move out. It wasn't an issue with the rent. We haven't been late in years. He wants us out so he can remodel the house and charge more than twice what we're paying now.

Well we fond a little house that we could afford. But after rent, deposit, pet deposit and renting a U-Haul, there wasn't enough to hire movers. No problem. My son, Andrew, said he and his roommate, Will, could move us. (My wife and I are both disabled and would be less than useless at helping with the move.)

Then came the event that has broken us all. Two weeks ago, Andrew awoke to the feeling of his heart racing. My daughter took him to the hospital and he was admitted to the Cardiac ICU. He was there for a week during which time they found him once slumped over and unresponsive. They got him back. After a week in CICU he had improved enough that he was moved to a regular room Were he was then treated for pneumonia. After 15 days in the hospital, he was allowed to come home last Thursday afternoon. They sent him home with an oxygen concentrator. He said he was still feeling pretty weak and he went to bed.

Yesterday, at abou8t 8:00 am, Andrew's roommate found him slumped over in his bed again. He was gone. He was only 42. He was my first-born. My wife, younger son, daughter and I are beside ourselves with grief. Andrew's roommate, Will, is putting up a brave face, but we can tell that he is hurting, too.

So all that to ask if there are 2 or 3 Freepers with pick-ups in the Sapulpa, OK area who might be able to help Will get us into our new place. I can't afford to pay any more than pizza and pop when everything is done. I wouldn't ask but my wife is taking this worse than any of us and she just wants to get away from the painful memories.

Talk to your pastor or fellow members of your church for help with moving and with your bereavement. God bless you all.

Wish I could help, but I’m in Florida. I do wish you luck though.

Yeah, we’re just moving from one house to another here in the same small town.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re struggling like this. I do hope you and your family know though compassion of Christ in your life. I might recommend post to the next door app the same post here, as it will all be local in your neighborhood and you’ll find a much more available source of help. I am praying for you and your family and again, I’m really sorry about the loss of your son.

Yes. I’m going to try again in the morning. I didn’t garner any offers of help when I asked last week. But our situation has changed.

I am very sorry for your tragic loss.

Worst case, it at least sounds as if your landlord isn’t immediately handing your place over to a new tenant and, given all circumstances, could presumably bend a bit if it takes you a few days to marshal your resources.

Wow, I am so sorry, that is absolutely horrific. What was causing his heart to race? An infection? What a nightmare, my condolences. I’m in New York unfortunately. I would ask people in your church/temple for help if you go to either. Do you have any friends/neighbors who can help?

This is a national forum, the odds of anyone being in your area are low.

I suggest Nextdoor.com.

So sorry for your loss and your situation, overall.

Are you on the Nextdoor app, for your area?

I see folks reaching out for help, all of the time, in our area....and, the response to help others is always so overwhelming.

I like the suggestion to call your church.....what a wonderful mission for them to have, helping you and your dear family resettle, during this very sad time.

Prayers up, for you, all.

LOL...GMTA.

I see folks, on Nextdoor, asking for help, daily.

One lady said she’d recently moved to the area and needed .... get this....decor!!

She even listed the color scheme she wanted.

I was shocked. But, even MORE shocked to see so many reply with pics of requested color decor, they had for her.

I'm not nearby or I'd help. But explain to the pastor your new circumstances and he could probably roust up some people to help.

What terrible news. I am in MA, so physically helping is not possible. I will keep you in our prayers.

So very sorry for the loss of your son. This is a tremendous cross to bear, but with God’s grace, you will make it through your grief.

Consider refusing to move.

If your landlord wants to remove you, he can bring an action in landlord/tenant court. But he will need grounds to do so. The allowable grounds will typically be spelled out in great detail in the wording of applicable statute (look up the law). If you were a tenant in New Jersey instead of Oklahoma, and your landlord merely wanted to renovate your unit but subsequently continue to rent it out, he would most definitely not, solely on that fact pattern, have grounds to evict. He would probably also not have grounds to up your rent beyond a certain point, which point might be a whole lot lower than the point he’s thinking of raising it to.

Check Oklahoma’s applicable eviction statute. You may find that what your landlord is trying to do does not comport with the law.

Also, don’t put up with an illegal lockout. If Oklahoma is like New Jersey, that’s an easy remedy. Just make out the proper affidavit, fill in the blanks on a court-provided complaint form in an Illegal Lockout Packet, and file it promptly with the proper county court. The Court will evaluate your papers, and if you have made out a proper prima facie case, immediately issue an order obliging your landlord to let you right back in.

"I was shocked. But, even MORE shocked to see so many reply with pics of requested color decor, they had for her."

Some folks have sheds and barns full of old junk they think "might come in handy someday".
