At the turn of the 20th century railroads as the primary means of transportation alongside boats with no highway network, no trucks, cars etc.

Railroads were big money makers they controlled destinies of communities could take over land to build new railroads easily and so on.

Railroads bought the politicians took the land it was satirized in stuff like “Blazing Saddles” and it some sort of theme in many Westerns.
