True. Another thing people get wrong is to claim the "Authorities" or the "Powers that be" or the "People in Charge" wanted the war. Simply not true.

For many young men, war is a way to get fame, fortune, and women (if you do not get killed or maimed). Almost no one foresaw the absolute meatgrinder WWI would become.

The WW1 leaders wanted to save face. Can’t be seen as backing down, even an inch. And the generals wanted glory and promotions.
But, yeah. You’re right about the young men. Thousands of them cheered in their town squares when war was declared. And no worries! It will all be over by Christmas, right?
Side point: Today’s young people seem to have wised up, at least a little bit. But our leaders and generals have not. The act just the same as the fools of 1914 did.
