Ruby Keeler was born into a catholic family in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on this date in 1909.
She worked hard in tough times: "Dancing in speakeasies was a job, and none of us knew for sure who were gangsters. No one told us, so how could we know? My mother used to come and take me home. We thought nothing of walking home together at two in the morning."
She supported Eisenhower's campaign in 1952.
In the movie “Dames”, Ruby Keeler’s character Barbara Hemingway said, “I’m free, white, and 21. I love to dance AND I’m going to dance.”
Those were different times.
“Al Jolson was my first husband.” she once said, “I think Al sensed that it wasn’t easy for me being married to an American institution ..... ”

I saw her in a revival of “No, No, Nanette” with Don Ameche. Busby Berkeley did the choreography.
It was quite fun to watch. I just wish I had been old enough to understand just how special it was. I was 13 or 14 at the time.
Ruby Keeler could just dance!

She was a heck of a golfer.

Yes. I enjoy all her films. I love the "Shanghai Lil" scene with James Cagney in "Footlight Parade".

I Only Have Eyes for You--The Warner/Vitaphone Orchestra & Chorus (1934)
Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell are featured in this production number ("music video" in today's lingo) from the movie 'Dames." Unfortunately, it's not the entire number, which features a man is so focused on his girl that he is unaware of his surroundings. The tune was a big hit in 1934 for "Eddie Jackson" (Freddy Martin) and others.

Definitely...and Cagney is so great in it. “Go into Your Dance” is another good one with Jolson.

She's my favorite. America's Sweetheart. 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade were especially great.
Her Shanghai Lil in Footlight Parade was a brilliant reference to Marlene Dietrich's Shanghai Lily in Shanghai Express, which came out just one year earlier.

She was a very good raconteuse and told her audience stories about her life, her movies, and her work with Busby Berkeley, which she said was a pleasant experience.
