USS Carney Shoots Down Missiles, Drones Fired From Yemen
The Drive - The War Zone ^ | 19 Oct 2023 | Joseph Tevithick

The U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Carney shot down a trio of land-attack cruise missiles and multiple drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen earlier today. The Houthis are among the groups that have threatened retaliation against Israel, as well as the United States, over ongoing operations targeting groups in the Gaza Strip.

Air Force Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon's top spokesman, confirmed the interceptions and said the Houthi attacks may still be "ongoing" at a press conference today. CNN had been the first to report the incident citing unnamed U.S. officials. "The crew of the guided-missile destroyer USS Carney operating in the northern Red Sea earlier today shot down three land attack cruise missiles and several drones that were launched by Houthi forces in Yemen," Ryder said. "This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense architecture that we've built in the Middle East, and that we are prepared to utilize whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interests in this important region."

The Houthis have an extensive array of long-range kamikaze drones, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, that it has acquired with Iranian assistance and that could potentially reach Israel

"There were no casualties to U.S. forces and none that we know of to any civilians on the ground," he added.

How effective will a carrier battle group’s Aegis system be in responding to 10,000 missiles and drones in a single attack? Supposedly 5000 overwhelmed the Iron Dome.

To over whelm Aegis system around a Carrier task group you need to fire 24,000 highly accurate missiles. Air Defense systems only attack the missiles that are a threat to the defensed zone.

What they fire at Israel are mass short and intermediate range dumb missiles.

Iron Dome is designed to defend against that but has a much larger area it has to defend. Remember land targets don’t move. Ships do

What the terrorists use to attack Israel is not much different then what the mass rocket attacks the Russians were using in WW2

I get that but this has long concerned me when they are screwing around the Taiwan Strait. I very much believe the Chicoms have produced as many as it will take. Why would you doubt it, especially considering they’re maneuvering around in that barrel that surrounds Taiwan? The NORKS have and continue to develop such systems. The Russians have been quite active the last 16 months in NK. Mundane things like swapping millions of rounds of the NORK limitless reserves of artillery munitions for ICBM targeting technology. Any assistance needed in developing the system you say will be necessary, the Russians will be there to barter for it.

Nope. Because all the hype and hysteria on Social Media is manufactured nonsense to get clicks for their podcast/web page etc.

You know why the most advanced Military in the world does not have hypersonics? Because back in the 1960s when the US screwed around with them they discovered a fatal draw back

You cannot maneuver them. They are great to fire at a land target but if you try to steer them, the physics of the forces involved destroys the rocket.

So from launch to impact the US Aegis system, on a moving target, has 100 seconds to intercept it with a whole host of anti missle technology at long, medium and short ranges.

The other flaw in this social media mything is the idea that the US Navy would have to operate close to the defense zone in a very limited territorial. Not true because it does not take into consideration the tanker capacity of the US Navy and Air Force.

The US Navy can launch a strike from quite a distance out and tanker up the planes both in bound and outbound

And finally, this all rest on the assumption that the US Navy operates in a bubble. Everyone seems to forget the Air assets that would be operating out of Japan, the Philippians and South Korea.

Hopefully you aren’t reading that nonsense from some navy document. Heaven help us if they believe it too.

MNJohnnie is spot on. As an ex-USN officer I see his analysis is correct.

I love this. First you tell me,
“To over whelm Aegis system around a Carrier task group you need to fire 24,000 highly accurate missiles. Air Defense systems only attack the missiles that are a threat to the defensed zone.”

Chicoms got that in spades. Now you’re basically telling me to forget what you just said, then proceed to lay that last gibberish on me. What gives?

What happened is a lot of really smart people with an almost unlimited budget in Europe, Japan, Israel and the USA spent a lot of time and energy trying to keep up with what Soviet Russian Propaganda was telling them their systems could do.

So the US build Ageis which is basically a missile defense system that they then build a ship around. So then Reagan launched the Strategic Defense Initiative (AKA Star Wars) and a whole lot more money got dumped into making it even better.

I am not sure but I think under Bush 2 they dumped a whole lot more money into it as Star Wars 2 to defend the US and Europe against an Islamic Bomb.

This is why I say sending the Navy was the only smart thing Der Biden ever did in his whole life. Ground bases are a whole lot easier a target to hit with conventional, or suicide , attacks then a carrier battle group.

At least they seem to have learned that lesson from the disaster in Lebanon in 1982

The Soumar (Persian: سومار) is an Iranian long-range cruise missile. The missile was named in the honour of a village called Soumar, whose inhabitants were all killed when Saddam Hussein’s regime attacked the village with chemical weapons. It is highly likely that the missile is derived from the Russian / Soviet Kh-55, several of which were illegally sold to Iran by Ukraine in 2001.[1]

Nope

Try reading it again.

What I did was point out several of the areas of misinformation in your assumptions. I assumed you were a ration adult who could follow complex ideas. My mistake. I will simply it

Russia equipment is several generations behind US in terms of capacity. Chicom systems are basically re-engineered Russian and Western designs

Some day they may close that gap, that day will not be anytime soon
