I assume drug and alcohol abuse are rampant there. I’ve been to Ithaca about a dozen times and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sun out.
I once drove there in the winter when the roads were icy. Some of the streets were so steep my car would just slide down even while I held the brake. Beautiful the rest of the year though with the gorges and whatnot. I use to have a cottage on the finger lakes. Nice place to summer.
It is more sunny than the authentic Oregon coast on the beach. During term you are (or at least were in the 80’s and 90’s) guaranteed to see the (Cornell Daily) Sun a minimum of five days a week provided that you subscribed, which I did. It is beautiful for being on the wrong side of the Mississippi, and I both don’t regret that I spent three years and that I decided to cram four years into three because it is still on the wrong side of the Mississippi, at least in the U.S.
There is a little-known Mississippi river in Ontario more or less due north of Ithaca, but a little to the east.
And gundog, your reaction is classic MHS. Too bad there isn’t more of that in the east. As my marriage was breaking down I visited Coos County and the wife of one of my friends from Greenacres offered to fly to Ontario and kick my estranged wife’s ass.
