Mistake or not by the judge, Trump will be convicted. His only hope will be having the conviction(s) overturned on appeal(s). I have next to zero faith in the US judicial system in doing the right thing.

It’s not a criminal trial. He can’t be “convicted”. He’s on trial for civil penalties.

He has already been convicted and was convicted before the trial began.
This charge was brought under New York Executive Law-EXC 63. Under this law, once the Grand Jury releases an indictment, the NY State Attorney General can select a judge she chooses to resolve the case.
Under this law, the Judge can hold a hearing or just read the statements from both sides and make a judgment.
This Judge made a ruling just by reading the statements and ruled that Trump was guilty of fraud before the trial began and that Trump cannot do business in the state of New York (this part of the ruling way stayed by a higher court for further review.
The trial is just a show trial to determine the amount of the fine and was not necessary at all.
