“You have to be a problem solver to remain employed.”
And that’s it, in a nutshell. Be the guy everyone knows as that guy who’ll know what to do when things go south.
The root of the problem is insecure managers who hire for personal validation, not work skills. Baby boomer managers who did that were long ago selected out of the workplace by evolution and are saying “Welcome to Wal-Mart” now, but there are still plenty of Gen X and Millennial managers hiring people based on how the new hire makes them feel about themselves. “I’m so progressive! I just hired a [insert label here]!”
Meanwhile the older competent employees who are going to have to pick up the slack are muttering, “Oh [expletive], not *another* [label].”

So do I, live with me. Get a very modest allowance but typically double it with extra chores. Older one works in the stadium at school games.
For some jobs this is reasonable. Think of all the candy store eye candy bimbos acting as building receptionists. All they need is a nice smile, nice body, and knowledge of how to steer people on.

If schools are a waste of time, aside from the vocational, employers should probably just do personality and aptitude tests, and train the best candidates themselves.
