NASCAR took a gut-punch when the fans booed Michelle Obama and Jill Biden when they appeared at a race at Homestead, FL in 2011. Barack Obama retaliated by canceling military flyovers at NASCAR events.

After the Bubba Wallace incident at the garage, NASCAR has been reaching out to black audiences by encouraging black-owned team owners and black musicians performing at races. However, there have been no more black drivers competing at the Cup level besides Wallace.
