And that’s one of my pet peeves. The President is essentially an office manager. His (or her) job is to carry out the will of Congress.
But instead we have turned the position into some kind of exalted royalty. No wonder folks chase after it. Hail to the Chief! 21-gun salutes! Special flags and special seals. Get your picture on every history classroom’s wall.
It’s actually a bit repulsive. We might as well have a king.
The office of President was, in part, a way to placate that portion of the American electorate that still wanted a King.
It was claimed that the President would represent the zeitgeist of the people but be subject to periodic replacement - a reasonable compromise.
Trump, like Reagan, perfectly represented that wish.
