NFL to allow Guardian Caps to be worn during regular season games this year
ESPN ^ | Kevin Seifert

If your first question is, what the heck is a Guardian Cap don’t feel bad because I asked the same question - it’s a padded outer shell worn over a normal helmet and is meant to cut down on concussions. In practice this might be a good idea but in games it makes the player’s head look enormous and also makes them look ridiculous IMO. Football is a violent contract sport that a lot of people love, making the players look ridiculous is going to be bad for the sport. Since this is voluntary this year it will be interesting to see how many players actually wear them

It’s still the number one sport for television and it’s not close

Football is popular for a lot of reasons and one of the biggest is the legalization of sports gambling and fantasy football

bobbleheaded players will lend a more authentic look to the playing field considering all of the children in the NFL. like watching tyke football...only larger tykes.

NFL? Who watches anymore? The very day that disrespectful WOKE POS took a knee during the National Anthem was my LAST DAY of watching the NFL. FOREVER!!!

Haven’t looked back and haven’t missed it.

P.S. Yes those “caps” look STUPID

Evidently a lot of people still watch football because over 60 million people watched the most recent Super Bowl, it’s fine to not care about football but it’s still the number one sport in America by a wide margin

Just change the format to flag football already and get it over with.

Been wondering when they would do that, at least for quarterback. Don’t want to lose the cash cow

Perhaps before that with be the three Mississippi rule for defense

Why the cap? Most players have nothing up there to protect.

It would actually solve a lot of problems. Less injury, decrease CTE etc.

I submit that that is why the flag format was introduced in the pro bowl......to see if fans would accept or reject it.

I’m thinking “time outs” before a tackle or limiting tackles or hits to requesting the opponent to lay down if a specific point on the field of his or her choosing. All games must end in a tie as to not offend.

“making the players look ridiculous is going to be bad for the sport.”

But keeping them from concussion protocols is better. It’s not the answer to medical effeciency but it does cut the chances of an emergency by about 10%.

It wasn’t until the 1920’s that helmets were used widely in football and those were almost a world war I flying cap. The first helmets were actually used by Lafayette College in the late 1860’s to protect ears from being grabbed during tackling.

The new helmet will be made probably by 2nd Skull® and it has been in experimentation to replace the Rydells for a number of years. Looks like a plasstic riding helmet.

Leather helmets protected heads more than people think.
No-one wants to lead with the head if it hurts!
Bring back leather helmets.
And give them spears and a mace.
That would be worth watching.

Every player should have a mouthpiece in and a neck guard regardless of position. As a former hockey coach, my biggest pet peeve was a kid not wearing the neck guard that his parents bought him, since it wasn’t mandatory.

If there is protective gear available, buy it and make sure your kid wears it. Now for foam over helmets? unfortunately concussions are part of any sport. I would severely penalize intentional hits to hurt a player. Like a season ban the first time and a lifetime ban the second time. I get there is the heat of battle, but these are no longer children.

“football is a contact sport”...no, dancing is a contact sport...football is a “COLLISION” sport.

We could always wrap the players in bubble wrap to help prevent injury, yes I know that’s absurd, but injuries are part of the game, head injuries over time will go down as the idea of using your head as a battering ram is coached out of football due to penalties and threats of ejection.

Football is a brutal contact sport played by grown men, injuries are part of the game and yet people line up to play it and playing it in the NFL is their dream.

What’s next, putting protective headgear on UFC fighters or professional boxers.
