TOPICS: U.S. Congress
KEYWORDS: georgia; redistricting
This is just one of the things that Georgia's Democratic Governor Roy Barnes and his party did to tick off the mushy middle in Georgia. The map on the left is Georgia US congressional districts before the 2000 redistricting. The map on the right is the state map after redistricting. Even the country bumpkins that don't know that Carter isn't in office anymore can tell that this is gerrymandering of the worst kind.

There is just one problem with this new map ... In order to hold control of the existing seats, they had to leverage the Democratic vote so thin in their districts that they put the mushy middle in control while leaving the Republicans so condensed in their districts that they are virtually invincible. Look at the returns and you will see that most of the Republican wins were landslides. The two that were narrowly won, were drawn to give Democrats the edge, but the mushy middle jumped ship over the map, the flag change, the Northern Arc around Atlanta and education -un-reform that has caused GA to decline in National statistics.

Before this election there were 8 Republicans and 3 black Democrats. Now we have 8 Republicans, 4 black Democrats (but not McKinney!) and one race that is still too close to call. Race is not an issue in that election.
