"I hate to see the American flag hanging out of every bloody station wagon, out of every SUV, every little Midwestern house in some residential area," Anderson was quoted as saying. "It's easy to confuse patriotism with nationalism. Flag waving ain't gonna do it."

Not that I'm a big fan, but...

I'm not sure what he's trying to say here. I was annoyed that flags appeared everywhere after 11 September, but generally disappeared after a month or so-- and the ones that were still flying were tattered, faded, and almost unrecognizable. If this is what he's getting at, then I guess I tend to agree-- but it's hard to say from the little snippet that they're reporting.

I thought they were wonderful. Our nations colors were once again flying high. People started to remember how great it was to be an American. What would you have prefered? The hammer and sickle?

"We found somebody who will supply us with flags," LoCascio said, "and we'll be handing them out to anybody who wants one."

Good man. We could use more like him.

I would prefer people fly the flag in accordance to the U.S. Flag Code.

Way to take my statement completely out of context. Makes me wonder if someone is doing the same thing in the article.

If you'll re-read my post, what bugged me is that it was extremely short-lived-- and the ones that didn't even bother to remove the flags left a tattered remnant which, in my opinion, is worse than removing it.

Our flag is an icon that needs to be cherished and kept looking good.

Most assuredly. Went to one of his concerts in the 70's - ended up walking out he was so rude to the audience....not to mention exceedingly crass.

Isn't he a Brit? I don't blame him for not being patriotic, given that when they sing "God Save the Queen," nobody knows who they mean, Elizabeth or Charles.

If Mr. Anderson doesn't like the United States flag, I suggest he pack his bags and go back to Great Britain or wherever the hell he's from.

'Ya know... would say we should boycott his music - but don't people do that anyway?

I mean, does anyone really care about this '70's dinosaur? What's up with a flute in a rock band, did the accordian dude already have a gig?

I hope my flag pisses him off. I hope I offend the beeejeeebers out of him. Go back to wherever. FO.

"I was annoyed that flags appeared everywhere after 11 September"

And 99% of us were 'annoyed' that 3,000 people were killed, forcing us to rally and send family members to war.

I guess the flags at the 3000 funerals were annoying too.

Holy buckets! I didn't realize that something I said warranted a flamesuit.

Please feel free to actually read my post before having a knee-jerk reaction.

I think our flag is great. Shortly after 11 September, I built a flag pole, installed a light, and fly it according to the U.S. Flag code (available on any number of websites). I remove it in inclement weather, and fly it at half staff when appropriate (even when we lose DEM state senators).

What bugs me is the emotional response, without the follow-through-- as indicated by the tattered, faded, or removed flags shortly thereafter. Probably some of the same people that think we should be pulling out of Iraq now.

I agree. My neighborhood is full of tattered, faded flags flying 24 hours a day, in all kinds of weather. What I wonder is if these people, the ones with the bumper stickers and lapel pins, were so patriotic, where were their flags before 9/11? To slap a flag bumper sticker on your car after 9/11 and call yourself a patriot, and criticize those who don't fly a flag as unpatriotic, seems a little misguided, at best.

I agree completely...well, almost completely.

I can't dump on anyone for not having a flag prior-- although it had been on my list of stuff to do, 11 September actually gave me the impetus to actually build the pole. So I jumped on the bandwagon too, as it were. What annoys me are the people who kind of slid off the bandwagon after a few months, leaving the rest of us with tattered reminders of how fair-weather they are.

If someone no longer wishes to fly a flag, now that the uproar has apparently died down, I guess that's their choice. But please remove the unrepresentative rags.
