What happens to a society when it can go no lower?

Any of you freepers remember that Zager and Evans song "In the Year 2525?" I think one verse answers your question:

In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head.
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been,
Or tear it down and start again.
