Organ/Tissue Donation

Donate Life LogoOrgan Donation: It's all about LIFE

There are two essential steps to saving lives through organ donation

1. SHARE YOUR LIFE. Decide to be a donor.

Transplants provide hope for thousands of people with organ failure. In addition, hundreds of thousands more can be helped with tissue transplants. Unfortunately, the need for donors is much greater than the actual number of donors. Your commitment to organ and tissue donation can save lives.

2. SHARE YOUR DECISION. Tell your family.

The most important part of deciding to be a donor is telling your family. Talking about donation doesn't mean talking about death. It is talking about the opportunity to give another person a second chance at life. Even if you have signed a donor card or indicated your wish to donate on your driver's license, you need to tell your family since they will be consulted before donation can take place.

Important facts about donation:
There is no national registry of organ and tissue donors. Even if you have signed something, be sure you have told your family of your wishes as they will be consulted before donation can take place.

All major religions approve of organ and tissue donation and consider donation the greatest gift.

An open casket funeral is possible for organ and tissue donors.

There is no cost to the donor's family or estate for organ and tissue donation. Funeral costs remain the responsibility of the family.

People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissue can be donated.
Organ Donor Card

Organ Donor Card
You can download and print out an organ donor card. But remember, completing this card alone is not enough. You also need to discuss your wishes with your family.

Bone Marrow Donation: The Living Gift of Life

Marrow transplants are the only hope for survival for many children and adults with leukemia, aplastic anemia, and other fatal blood diseases and cancers. Unfortunately, nearly 70 percent of these patients cannot find suitably matched marrow donors within their families. They need to find unrelated marrow donors - people who have volunteered to donate marrow if ever matched with any patient in need. A national registry of marrow donors is maintained by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

Because tissue types are inherited, and some tissue types are unique to certain racial or ethnic groups, a patient's best chance of finding a match is within his or her ethnic and racial group. Currently, the majority of the volunteers on the NMDP Registry are Caucasian. While all volunteer donors are welcome, there is a critical need for minority donors to help the many minority patients searching the Registry.

You can become a volunteer donor through your local donor center if you are between the ages of 18 and 60 and are in good health. To find out the center closest to you, and to learn more about the donation process, go to the National Marrow Donor Program Web Site (www.marrow.org) or call 1-800-MARROW-2.

These guys can't even decide what Church they should go to, how in the heck can they run our country?

Howard Dean was baptized Catholic, and raised as an Episcopalian. He left the church after it opposed a bike trail he was championing, and now he is a Congregationalist, though his kids consider themselves Jewish."

Wesley Clark's father was Jewish. As a boy he was Methodist, then decided to become a Baptist. In adulthood he converted to Catholicism, but he recently told Beliefnet .com, "I'm a Catholic, but I go to a Presbyterian church."

They can't make up their minds about anything. Apparently they think having connections to so many different religions will give them something in common with more voters.

A November 20th statement from spokesman Backerman.

"The big lie against Michael Jackson is anchored in the most vicious allegation imaginable, one that resonates across every culture: the spectacle of harming a child. That spectacle invites outrage, and it should. But this spectacle is rooted in a lie.

"Michael said, 'Lies run sprints, but the truth runs marathons. The truth will win this marathon in court.'

"Michael is going to defend himself with the force of his spirit, as would anyone falsely accused of something so monstrous."

Yawn.

"I resigned today over strategic differences with the way things are going," Backerman told Reuters in an interview. He declined to elaborate on those differences.

Mr. Backerman isn't interested in playing the race card it seems. Or perhaps Calypso Louie and his thugs make Backerman uncomfortable.

Of course Geragos has no shame and will float any outrageous barbra striesand to free his client.

though his kids consider themselves Jewish."

Isn't Judith, Dean's wife Jewish? If so they're Jewish whether they consider it or not.

Did you find Chels in the photo? Evidently Ian was there too, maybe he is one of the Muffets, hee hee.

The former First Couple was joined by their daughter, Chelsea, and her boyfriend, Ian Klaus.

During the show, Klaus squirmed visibly while one "Avenue Q" character struggled with the idea of proposing to his girlfriend. The 42nd prez had his own moment of apparent discomfort during the show's signature song about Internet porn. But Republican-bashing gags brought applause from the family.

"I really loved the show," Chelsea told us. "Since it was about finding your purpose in life, I could really relate to that."

Chelsea is also learning to relate to her new image as a Manhattan working girl (she's a $100,000-a-year consultant with the New York office of the Brit-based McKinsey & Co.). "When I was younger and going through an awkward stage, people used to always tell me I looked like my dad," she said. "But now people are telling me that I look more like my mom, which I love because I think she's beautiful."

After the show, Chelsea and Klaus jetted to Miami to begin a New Year's break. They were spotted at the club Mynt. Broadway Bill

Yep, if you have a Jewish mama, you are Jewish. Drudge evidently has a teaser out that he knows something about Judith Dean (Dr. Steinberg) and will break it after the New Year...

Yikes.

Can we classify movies in 5th and 6th place bombs?

The top 20 movies at North American theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. and Nielsen EDI Inc.:

5. "Paycheck," Paramount, $13,462,374, 2,762 locations, $4,874 average, $18,615,272, one week.

6. "Mona Lisa Smile," Sony, $11,351,439, 2,677 locations, $4,240 average, $31,226,270, two weeks. Source

But some red-faced gal groupies of the ex-Commander in Chief had to stop themselves mid-catcall when they realized that Sen. Hillary Clinton was with him.

"Oh, my God, is that him? He looks so handsome in person," gushed one woman, who was old enough to know better.

My head is spinning.

One of the benefits of removing Saddam from Iraq...

The United States is open to restoring a dialogue with Iran after "encouraging" moves by the Islamic republic in recent months, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said yesterday.

Iranian leaders have agreed to allow surprise inspections of the country's nuclear energy program, have made overtures to moderate Arab governments and, in the past week, have accepted direct U.S. help as the country struggles with the effects of a devastating earthquake.

"There are things happening, and therefore we should keep open the possibility of dialogue at an appropriate point in the future," Powell, who is recovering from surgery for prostate cancer, said in an interview. "All of those things taken together show, it seems to me, a new attitude in Iran in dealing with these issues -- not one of total, open generosity. But they realize that the world is watching and the world is prepared to take action." washpost

Chelsea looks at the mirror through vodka goggles, apparently (that has to be how Ian does it, too). Now that Hillary's discovered mango martinis, on her recent trip to Miami, I'd wager even ol' Bill is starting to look good to her.

Speaking of Chelsea and Miami, from the NY Post:

December 30, 2003 -- Sightings: CHELSEA Clinton bumping and grinding with Mark Wahlberg on top of a table at the Shore Club in Miami while her hapless boyfriend, Ian Klaus, looked on . . .

All I could find about Bunky Cushing was that he was a 'man-about-town'. He is probably gay since everything about him is in gay publications.

Out Chicago way, Bunky Cushing gathered together a good group of 65 of his ladies friends for a benefit luncheon billed Handbags and Halos, which was held in the RL restaurant.

Guests were advised to donate a handbag they no longer used which then went to the Howard Brown Health Center's Brown Elephant Resale Shop.

The Brown Elephant operates two outlets: a 14,000 square foot store at 3651 North Halsted and a new 5000 square foot store at 3939 North Ashland. The Brown Elephant Resale stores are among the windy city's most successful resale establishments, grossing more than $1.5 million annually.

Established in 1982, the Brown Elephant is the first resale shop in the country created to raise funds specifically for HIV/AIDS care. Mr. Cushing is regarded as one of Chicago's "social magnets", confidant and companion to many of society's women from Chicago, Grosse Pointe and Palm Beach and his luncheon events bring out a stellar crowd.

They raised $8,000 on this windy day. And 4 designer handbags were raffled off to Peg Lombardo (who won the Kate Spade handbag); Hazel Barr (who won the Ralph Lauren handbag); Linda Heister (who won the Tod's hanbag); and Susie Kealy (who won the Marlowe handbag).
