The King for the Troops
A grass-roots organization called Operation HomeFront sends care packages to hundreds of troops serving in Iraq. In my humble opinion, these packages would be much improved if they contained Return of the King DVDs for them to watch in their down-time. If you would like to donate a DVD for this mission please email me. For more information on Operation HomeFront and its services, follow the link below.
Ring Ping for a good cause!
I got my own ROTK DVD today, woohoo! Off now for a few hours of bliss!
Wow, my Chuck Taylors are much darker blue in that picture!
That was so much fun sending those books...
TODAY???? How did you get it today?
winmag may correct me on the details, but I think he's sent out over 100 of them by now.
This page isn't up to date (I'll sweet-talk my honey about that) but these pages talk about it! The Hobbit Hole :: Troop support projects

Anyone wishing to be added to or removed from the Ring-Ping list, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Indeed, how'd you get it TODAY?
I can't pick up my trilogy set until tomorrow.
Maq's not answering! Harumph!
Probably busy watching ROTK... We won't be hearing a peep for hours!
Eyes are far from being dry. Ah, so much better than I remembered it even. The picture quality and the transfer are just amazing, by far the best image transfer of all the LOTR DVDs, they must have used a new encoding method...The CGI looks magnificant, much clearer and more realistic than on the big screen, and of course, the emotion is all there :-)
As to where I got it, well, I know a few local places that always put their DVDs for sale as soon as the stock comes in. Just lucky.
You know, 11 Oscars, and right after watching it...you can really see why they were all deserved. Ah, what a wonderful movie.
Through work, my husband just sent a huge package of fruitcups, chapstick and Twizzlers...
..on the top of the fruitcups, he wrote different words of encouragement like...
We support you!
God bless you
...etc.
I think that's a great idea, however I will add that I know someone whose brother is in the 4thID and he had a copy of ROTK back in February which he sent home to her prior to returning to the US.
I have the great pleasure of running the Hobbit Hole "Skunk Works". Based on my past Army experience, I search constantly for gadgets or products that will make live, and survival, easier for our troops. Of course, if something looks promising, I have to buy one to evaluate. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. :)
The Hobbit Hole pocket knife is our bread-and-butter gadget, but we also send EMT snips (an amazing tool for $2), GMRS radios, assorted types of flashlights, sunscreen, solar showers, and just about anything else that will hold up, and (hopefully) be on sale. We aren't made of money, so smart shopping is a big part of the effort.
But this is an effort by the entire Hobbit Hole. People contribute generously to my "department", and to Wneighbor, who handles edibles, reading material, and movies. Other folks have specific individuals in mind, and we contribute to those packages, too.
We've purchased 181 knives to date, but the last 40 are still awaiting laser engraving, and my "tuning". I spend about ten minutes on each knife, making sure all the screws are tightened with loctite, and then the knife is given a final honing on a leather strop. The knife is as perfect as I can make it, and I sleep well at night, knowing I'm not letting some little problem slip by me.
If anyone is interested in sending one of these knives to someone in the military, please freepmail me.
I feel like that Far Side cartoon with Carl Sagan as a child looking up at the stars exclaiming "Look at the stars! - there must be hundreds of them!
Back to the thread topic... ask around your contacts and see if any are set up to watch movies. With ecurbh and me joining households, we have a few duplicated DVD's... Theatrical version FoTR and TTT DVDs, and an extra extended edition of FoTR and TTT. We'd send them if they have anything to play them on!
You'd be better off asking Wneighbor. She has the same contact list as me, and ships more frequently. Movies would go well with her care packages. Although I don't know offhand who out there defending us have DVD players, and who don't.
FYI on this a lot of the troops over there have seen it, my brother, who got back about 3 months ago saw a bootleg copy obtained locally.
Though the quality of the official DVDs will be a lot better!
