Quick question. Does anyone here use a heat sink to heat and cool their business or home? What has your experience been. Do you live in an extreme climate like Maine or in a relatively temperate climate like VA?

Would you do it again and if so, how different.

Do you mean a 'Heat Sink' or a 'Heat Pump'. Don't think a Heat Sink would do much of anything for a house no matter where....I don't have a heat pump, but some people up here do.....

No, a heat sink -- or at least heat storage -- is a good idea. When I was at TI back in the '80s they installed big underground water reservoirs to store chilled water at night when electricity was cheap and then use if for cooling during peak periods during the day. Bank One Ballpark here in Phoenix uses a similar scheme.

For consumers who decide to make use of it, you can get electricity for 4 cents a KWH off-peak vs. 16 cents on-peak. If you cool your house down a few degrees extra in the morning (at 4 cents), you can survive with the air conditioner off most of the afternoon (at 16 cents). I haven't heard of any individuals installing water reservoirs, however.

The kind of thing I am looking at requires you to put out piping in the yard and use a system to get the heat or cold off of the water circulating in the piping.

Ok, but I've never lived anyplace that required an AC any time from WA., MS., CA., ID., MT., SC., CO., KS., LA., TN., Japan and England plus some others I've probably forgotten about. Spent time in the summer in AZ too.....

Most offices in our area require airconditioning during the dog days of summer.

The younger generations just can't hack it without all the modern conveniences....There are a few people here in western WA. with heat pumps..Don't know how well they work out cost wise.......

Unless you have temperatures that are mostly above 32 degrees, they're pretty useless.

They function perfectly good as an air conditioner.
