Live aboard a sailboat...we did around Puget Sound for four years...no car needed, a different view out the porthole as desired, salmon and crab...mmmm. Plenty of ports with grocery stores nearby...it's an alternative lifestyle that is quite enjoyable if you've a nest egg that will support it. We didn't at the time but still enjoyed it immensely.

Your post has caused all kinds of fantasies to come rushing into my head. I did technical service work for one of the refineries in Anacortes, Washington back in 2001, and I made 5 trips there betweeen October 2000 and October 2001. I remember walking around the harbor area, looking at the boats, and wondering about the life that you just described. I'd park at the parking lot by the harbor and take a walk around the city park there. I remember watching the kingfishers flying around the boats in the evening. I'd eat at the little seafood place at the entrance to the docks. If I ever become very rich, I'm going to do it.
