The Diamondbacks believed they were close enough to trading Randy Johnson to the Dodgers that they actually went to him this week and asked if he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to be dealt to Los Angeles. But Johnson declined, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal.
At this point, with the trade deadline just a few days away, Arizona believes its alternatives are either to deal Johnson to the Yankees or keep him.
Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark he wouldn't comment on any particular trade and said only that he and Arizona GM Joe Garagiola Jr. "continue to talk, on various topics, as we have over the past couple of weeks. But at this stage, there is still nothing imminent."
The Diamondbacks and Dodgers are known to have spoken about deals involving both Johnson and outfielder Steve Finley. But it's believed the package that would have headed to the Diamondbacks from L.A. for Johnson would have included reliever Guillermo Mota and outfielder Jayson Werth, plus two Dodgers pitching prospects -- Chad Billingsley and Chuck Tiffany.
The two teams also discussed a variation of the trade which would have sent catcher Paul Lo Duca to Arizona.
However, Johnson turned the deal down and told the Diamondbacks again that the only team he wants to be traded to is the Yankees, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.

stays put? I put my money he goes to NY.
That's all the MLB is now, a farm system for the Yankees.
The Big Unit met with reps from some NY corporations in some smokey backroom where they promised him endorsement deals out the wazzoo if he came over.
Hopefully he will stay in Arizona. The Yankees simply do not have enough of a minor league system to make this trade without a third team joining. The Yankees are going to start to reap the benefits of trading away their younger players in order to get veterans to help them try and win a World Series. Here's hoping the Yankees lose Game 7 of whatever playoff series to the Red Sox on a Garciaparra home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Ditto. Let him languish in Arizona. He burned us in Seattle when he was traded to Houston
The AZ Mgmt won't do it. The Yanks have nobody they're interested in, and doing it anyway would violate the first law of trades...NEVER trade something for nothing.
Hey, anyone know what is going on with J. Giambi? I heard he may be sick to the point of possibly not being able to play ball again. Something about a stomach virus?
Supposedly some kind of internal parasite, I heard...
In reading at www.espn.com, it seems that both Kevin Brown and Juice-ambi both had some sort if intestional parasite.
I would like the Yankees to get him just to hear the Sox fans cry like the bitchy babies that they are.
It will work out. There will probably be a 3 way trade (or more) involving as many as a dozen players.
Reportedly, Randy's agent told Garagiola that "If Randy's still here after Saturday, you're going to have a very unhappy and unhelpful player." (or words to that effect." And Joe replied, "And that'll be different how?"
When teams SHOULD be trying to acquire his -wife-!

Da stink'n Yankees!
Pleasant thought...but it assumes Nomah is still with the Red Sox...lotsa rumors about him imminent trade swirling around the Boston Dirtdogs website..
How bout dem apples.
Go back to the Expos, Randy.
We've got less than 30 minutes to the trading deadline. I think he either stays put, or becomes a Yankee. It's a big game of chicken, IMHO.
