Eighty-Foot Dead Whale Heads for Coast

An 80-foot dead whale has been spotted floating in the Solent off the south coast of England and is expected to wash ashore in the next few days -- a rare occurrence in southern Britain, the UK coastguard said on Monday.

The carcass, thought to be a Fin Whale, is a couple of miles off Southsea, close to Portsmouth. The coastguard has issued navigational warnings to all shipping in the area.

Experts from London's Natural History Museum are expected to conduct a post-mortem once it beaches, to establish why it died.

The coastguard said beachings on the south coast are rare, with most whale strandings taking place on the east coast, although in January 2003 a 15-foot Minke Whale washed ashore on the Isle of Wight.

Not to pick nits, but I thought "beaching" was when a live/dying animal essentially swam into shallow water or up on the beach. This sounds to me more of a case of washing ashore than beaching.

I know some of you FReepers know a lot more than I - what's the scoop?

The democrat party is trying to get it registered as a democrat voter and get an absentee ballot issued to it as we speak.

According to the dictionary, either one is correct.

Main Entry: 2 beach
Function: transitive verb
1 : to run or drive ashore
2 : to strand on or as if on a beach

Though I don't think that's quite what you meant...

The best line of the Dave Barry article to which you refer:

"But this is no time for gaiety. This is a time to get hold of the folks at the Oregon State Highway division and ask them, when they get done cleaning up the beaches, to give us an estimate on the US Capitol."
