Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |

Ping to people who might concievably be interested in my con experience...
I was there from 9 to almost midnight but it really didn't seem that long. For me, there were three main "events". First I hit the dealer room - Rosie, imagine a huge wall filled with tables and booths where people sell everything from t-shirts to dvds, pins, hair clips, kimonos, and pocky. I was in "stuff-shock" for about half an hour, just staring at the pretty things.
The second big event was the anime music videos - clips from various animes and games set to various bits of music. It sounds stupid, but most of them were a lot of fun. I lost most of my voice there because the rule seemed to be if a clip was from an anime you liked, you screamed at the top of your lungs. This is also probably where I decided to buy "Escaflowne"; a number of songs had clips from the show, and one video used the music from one of the battles with clips from some dumb show... Dragonball Z, I think. Heh, as it was playing I turned to the girl next to me and said "this sounds like it's from Escaflowne", and it was!
I had to wait in line twice for the show. The first time, we were in the room, halfway through a rendition of "Man, I feel like a Woman" illustrated with various clips of bishounen... (the entire room was clapping in time with the song) when the system went down and wouldn't come up. So they had to have us come back for the next screening. It was a lot of fun, though.
The highlight was the costume/cosplay contest, though. Again, you had to scream if someone was dressed as a character from your favorite show... it was neat to see all the effort people had put into it. And then they had five groups perform little sketches.
In between I hit other events, looked through the art gallery, went back to the dealer's room several times, stood in line a lot, and lost one of the people who rode in with me. Um, hopefully she got a ride back quite a bit earlier than I left, otherwise she's still there.
The coolest part was just standing in line, chatting with random people about anime. I had an argument with one girl about the character of Kenshin, in Rurouni Kenshin; discussed whether or not the dub of "Fruits Basket" worked; had a "snobby anime fan" discussion with some other Fullmetal Alchemist fans (snobby because we know about it and those fans who only watch anime once it gets over here don't) and tons of other stuff.
The annoying thing was having to justify myself all the time. Most of the costumers were dressed as characters from "Inu-yasha" or "Naruto", and I got so tired of having conversations that basically went, "No, I can't say how accurate your costume looks because I don't have a clue who you are because I think Inu-yasha is a boring show with crappy art and I shouldn't have to justify my tastes to you". Other than for those two shows, the most prevalent costumes came from "Rurouni Kenshin".
It was totally cool. Next year I don't think one day will suffice. I barely got to watch any anime! Oh, and they didn't have "Dance Dance Revolution", which disappointed me, I wanted to watch someone playing that.
I'm already wonderin' 'bout yuh...
Yep! I have a hardcover copy of "Doomsday Book" already!
Hey, now...some of us are emphatically NOT that way...
Heh...I'm still enough of a newbie to all this that I don't know a lot of the shows you're referencing...but it sounds like a lot of fun!
The bishounen thing made me laugh!
Yikes...just figured out why I wasn't warm enough sitting at the computer - it's 63 in here. Not bad for when I'm moving around, but kinda chilly for sitting and typing or reading. I turned on the heat for the first time this year. *sigh* Not looking forward to those bills. I'm thinking I should invest in a coupla good wool sweaters...it'd be cheaper than oil!
It's the first one. I had hurt my eye on the thirteenth and this chopper circled on the seventeenth. I could barely make them out because of the double vision I was having after that plug hit me in the eye, you know? But I could make out that the side door was open.
I really clearly remember standing there just laughing in delight.
Today is only the third time they've actually completely circled, came down and obviously were circling around my house. The other times I think they either were in a hurry and "swerved" over to my house. I think they've done that 3-4 times...even Steve has seen that.
Once again, thank you for your assistance!
And so, it's also been over a year ago since they last circled.
I'm so happy. I had thought they never would again...which is ok, because all things come to an end. But I was as thrilled today as I was the very first time they did it.
I don't know anime, but that sounds like fun!
Heh, you realize we are in a minority of female anime fans since we don't like the bishie?
I know... you should plan to come visit me next year in time for the con and we can go together! And by then we should be able to get you a little more up to speed on anime... did you ever get bittorrent to work? If not I should get you some cds but I won't be able to mail them until Wednesday anyway.
I've noticed that military helicopers are prone to observing pretty females.
It's cool, IMO, on at least a couple levels.
It was fun! Any large crowd of geeks is fun. You could probably apply my description to, say, a "Star Trek" convention with just some different names... it was such a nice change, and a reminder that there are weirdoes like me out there.
I'm keeping an eye on her, married to her.
My day yesterday was a lot of fun, too. The morning was pretty quiet, and it was drippy, so we didn't go hiking. In the afternoon, Margaret and I went to a festival the town has every year - people come from around the area to show old time skills and crafts, i.e. instead of just selling homemade cider, they bring out the old equipment and show it and make cider to have right THERE. And there are people that spin, quilts for sale, soapmaking, butter churning, guys making canoes and even small boats, pottery (my favorite), rope, brooms, etc., etc. etc. It's very cool! And for two dollars a person, a pretty inexpensive way to pass an afternoon.
After that, I went back to the book sale briefly, and got another half a dozen books, including another Rex Stout. Woo-hoo! Also some classics (Dickens and Verne), and a book by Lucy Maud Montgomery that I've never read.
In the evening I went out to the house and we had dinner (I got ham and lots of different vegetables for a grand total of five bucks...felt pretty proud of myself...) and watched the first half of Anne of Avonlea.
Nice and relaxing. And it was SUCH a gorgeous day in the end! The colors are really starting to change - the frost will hasten that.
Heh...that just means more of the real guys for us.
I get dibs on Mustang.
Yeah....you may have just touched on part of why FR is so nice!
Maybe crazy ones too? ;-)
Good evening Sam!
