Is John Kerry Buddhist?
Sept. 20, 2004 | Hiram

John Kerry will often hold his palms together; place them in front of his chest and bow slightly in a gesture reminiscent of the Buddhist faith. I first notice this gesture during his midnight rally right after the end of the Republican Convention. Since then I have noticed him doing the same thing in several news clippings.

I know that Teresa Heinz Kerry’s oldest son operates a small Buddhist high school for troubled teens in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and I’m not implying anything but has anyone ever asked Kerry what the significance of this gesture is? What is he trying to convey? When did he adopt this gesture and what does it mean to him?

No, bowing is how elitists think other people like to be recognized.

That isn't a Buddhist gesture - that's Kerry praying that Teresa will let him into bed later that evening...

He is whatever wins the most votes in massachusetts, except he didn't realize that such behavior doesn't work in national elections... TOO BAD.

Don't know about that but I am getting weary of the peace sign...or is it the victory sign? I noticed Donald Trump does it now too.

Maybe he thinks he's the Buddha himself.

Every single movement or gesture Kerry makes is rehearsed, focus-grouped and studied for effect. Pay no attention to it.

No! John Kerry is an idiot and that gesture is his way of proving it.

My husband said the same thing, that it is an elitist gesture but I think it is because he spent too much time bowing before the North Vietnamese.

Don't insult Buddhists that way. At least they hold to their values.

That was one of the super-cool moves he learned while on one of his special missions to Cambodia.

It's a throw back to the days when he was bowing down in support of the North Vietnamese government!

You are correct. Kerry has adopted the Namaste manner of greeting used by many Hindus, Taoists and Buddhists. The Namaste greeging means "The God in me Salutes the God in you," and is decidedly an Eastern religious practice.
