Dodgers' Green to Miss Game on Yom Kippur

SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles Dodgers (news) first baseman Shawn Green will definitely sit out at least one game of a weekend series against the San Francisco Giants (news) in observance of Yom Kippur, but will wait until Thursday to make his final decision.

Green said Wednesday there's a possibility he'll sit out both Friday night and Saturday afternoon. He planned to talk to his wife and parents before making a final decision.

"No matter what, two games is a big commitment," Green said before the Dodgers played the San Diego Padres (news). "The standings a'nd what happens now, I don't think will play into it."

The Dodgers went into Wednesday night's game just 1 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco in the NL West race.

Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, starts at sunset Friday, and the three-game series at San Francisco begins that night. Saturday's game was given a 1:05 p.m. PDT start because it will be televised by Fox, and the Jewish Day of Atonement does not end until sunset that night.

Although I am not Jewish myself, I do respect his decision. I am sure he is being pressured by some to play since they are in the middle of the pennant race.

Isn't he already violating the Sabbath if he plays on any other Friday night or Saturday afternoon?

Alas, Shawn Green is in a bad PR situation in regards to his preference for following Jewish religious teachings. Imagine if the Los Angeles Dodgers lose the National League West division by 1-2 games, and you KNOW people will wrongly dump on Mr. Green for favoring his religious beliefs over the needs of the Dodgers in the pennant race.
