'American Candidate' Still Standing by Karla Dial, contributing editor

Final vote to take place this Sunday, Oct. 3

Two weeks ago, CitizenLink introduced you to Park Gillespie, a schoolteacher and father of four from the little town of Stanley, N.C. He's been given a unique opportunity to discuss biblical values to the nation through the Showtime reality series "American Candidate,"airing Sundays from 9 to 9:45 p.m. EDT and PDT.

Since then, hundreds of you have used CitizenLink to send Gillespie e-mails of encouragement and prayer-and this week, those prayers were answered: He remains the only conservative in the competition.

"This has been one wild ride,"Gillespie told CitizenLink Tuesday in an interview from his hotel room in Los Angeles, where he was taping one of the show's final two episodes. "I think the producers are shocked that we've made it this far, but it seems like conservatives all over the country really rocked the vote this week."

If other reality series, such as "Survivor" or "American Idol" have taught us anything, it's that they have the power to launch careers in the public eye. In addition to receiving $200,000 and a 15-minute, unedited, televised speech, the winner of "American Candidate," Gillespie said, is also likely to be offered "all kinds of opportunities to address national audiences-so it's more important than ever that Christians and conservatives take the time to call in their votes this week, and ask everyone they know to do the same."

The toll-free number and text-message code to vote for Gillespie will be closely guarded secrets until Showtime reveals it at the end of Sunday's episode at 9:45 p.m. EDT and PDT. At that time, it will be posted at both www.parkgillespie.com and www.parkforamericancandidate.com. Viewers (and other voters) will then have two hours to call in their votes to determine the show's final outcome.

The wonderful opportunity about this? A victory for Park Gillespie is a slap in the face to Showtime -- the network that aired that awful miniseries "The Reagans."

Please do your part to deliver that slap. Visit http://www.parkgillespie.com or http://www.parkforamericancandidate.com this Sunday, Oct. 3, at about 10 p.m. EDT or PDT and call the toll-free number set aside for Park.

I think Park is a great contribution to this show, he shows all americans how ignorant most christians are to civil rights issues.
