Fine - you have a different definition than the dictionary and apparently, I'm supposed to have known what it was. I might also add that half your definition is actually the word you are defining. I would be less obnoxious about pointing this out to you if you hadn't taken the time to assert that I didn't know what the word meant.

In any case, I still do not think they are pitiful, even using your definition. Why are they real sorry? What have they done that offends you so?

Any information on whether they plan to have a family together? If they started right now, he'd be 75 when his son/daughter turned 20. Yikes. Good thing they'll be able to hire help. He'll need it.
