The Hobbit Hole XVI - Still round the corner there may wait...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner there may wait...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Sounds reasonable...

I'm feeling horribly cranky for no real reason, and have to deal with a hard-to-explain-stuff-to user in a few minutes. That's practically TPL material. *sigh*

Awww... ok, TP is is.

Almost class time, and then I can go home for a little while and get some work done. Maybe.

I haven't had any writing time at work today, except during lunch. Which is all I can really feel entitled to, but since I've had quite a bit, I'm feelin' deprived. Then I had that guy to deal with this morning, and I'm having trouble accomplishing anything, i.e. nothing I try seems to work today...

Just one of those days.

Corin: Good letter!

Ecurbh: CRAP!

Rosie: Maybe you need to go to the nurse?

Hi all! We just got back from seeing the poodles. They were so sweet and the boys were thrilled. I got some good pictures.

The big ones would stand on their back legs and wave their front paws around in the air at me! I'd let them stand in front of me and lick me all over the face. The owner was mortified (at first) that her dogs were licking me on the face but then just laughed because I was making all these kissing sounds and loving ever minute of it.

Noooooo!

Looking forward to pictures! And I fixed ONE problem...catch is that I dunno how I did it, so if it comes right back, I'm sunk. I hate that...

Thanks everyone! It was a rather un-hobbitlike adventure.

There was slow traffic on the way to Seattle, and of course, once I got downtown, it took me longer than I expected to find the hotel. Everything is one-way streets there, so I kept having to loop around multiple streets, just to go a half-block. I was supposed to be there by 9:00 sharp, and it was getting pretty tight when I pulled up to the hotel's parking garage. Just then, the attendant carries out the "LOT FULL" sign and tells me I have to back out, and find another place to park. Just great.

So I loop around another 6 blocks, find a parking lot, and pay for my space. It is now about 8:57, and I have to walk 2 1/2 blocks to the hotel, and get up to the fourth floor to the conference room where the tryout is. Luckily, they are still doing introduction-type stuff, and I am rushed in and find a place to sit. I estimated there were probably about 60 people there.

They started off by showing us some samples of the word-play types of questions often seen on Jeopardy... not really necessary for someone who's been watching the show as long as I remember, but it does help me settle down and get into the right frame of mind. Then after a welcome video of Alex Trebek, the questions begin.

It was a 50-question written test, covering a wide variety of topics, with only 8 seconds between questions. There were Shakespeare, literature, art, poetry, geography, world history, state capitals, etc. Most I knew, some I had good guesses, and there were only about 6 I could not even come up with a good guess on. They collected the papers, and we took a potty break while they graded them.

When they came back, they gave away a couple door prizes, called the names of the 4 people who had passed and were to stay to play a practice game, and said goodbye to the rest of us. The scores were not announced, so there is no way of knowing if I came in 5th, 25th, or 55th... or even if it was being a few minutes late that knocked me out of contention. But walking out with that many other people made me feel like not such a loser.

So that was the end of my Jeopardy experience... for this year at least. Maybe if they come again next year I'll try again. I did get a nifty pen out of the deal, though.

Hey, I still think it's very cool that you had a shot at it!

Too bad they don't let you know your rating, though. That'd be nice to know.

Yay! I got that all set up and he was happy. Coolness.

Of course, on the way there, I had to overhear students advising a girl to "Never deal with IT - they're stupid". Uh-huh. First off, it ain't true. We're the best IT dept. in THIS state's state college system, in any case...and that's a fact, not an opinion. We also have power. Shouldn't say things like that within our hearing. You want your e-mail, kid?

Not that I'd really do anything, but...

How annoying! Ignore the moron. We have a couple people like that, and it's usually the ones who call us for things like "my mouse isn't working" (check to see if it's plugged in, doofus).
