Taxpayer funded professors against President Bush, mind you...
You're my hero. Following the money in this case is almost absurd, considering that the Kerry campaign should be paying these guys for signing their names to this hit piece.
This is only the *first* of 80+ pages of almost pure leftwing donations from Harvard (oh, they did manage to eak out a contribution to McCain once in a while, too)...

It is what it is -- even assuming they composed and signed the letter in good faith, economists are frequently wrong. Hence, the nickname: The Dismal Science.
What a pack of maroons.

What is my kid going to get from Harvard that she can't get at a well-run state school?
Is she going to be a better person?
[Granted, it's not an issue for me...we couldn't afford Harvard in our dreams. But I don't think she's really missing out on anything but the supposed "prestige," which is meaningless.)

An Ivy League degree opens many doors, both through the prestige and the people you meet there. Figure it's about $300,000 for an all inclusive Haaaarvard education, about the same price as one bedroom apartment in Manhattan. At that price it's a bargain that lasts a lifetime.
If you can figure out a way to make it happen, then go for it.
Unless one is going into politics, it's a horrendous waste of money.
If someone can afford it, as you say, fine...if you have nothing better to waste your money on.
Politics, Wall Street, law school/med school, large corporation, an Ivy league sheepskin moves you somewhat to the head of the line. That's not assured, mind you, but the credentials do provide an edge.
The other thing, of course, is the contacts. The guy you room with freshman year who gets the nickname is Skidmarks before Thanksgiving break and whose head you pulled out of the toilet on spring break -- has a step-father who sits on the boards of two or three large corporations. Good old Skimark's stepfather will take you out to lunch/dinner and make a couple of calls for you upon graduation.
It could be that this letter was planned.
As the next debate will be on domestic issues, I could foresee Kerry bringing this up by saying
" Mr President,.....surely you must know that in a letter to you 150+ collage professors of economics, intellectuals like myself, say you need to raise taxes on the rich"
Now if these so called "professors" truly believe this garbage, then they are all stuck in a 1970s Kaynesian timewarp of State controlled economies.
These are the same people who say we should structure our economy to look more like the French and German economies. Yet they will not admit that France and Germany are dangerously close to imploding under the weight of their own social programs and high taxes.
Maybe they will get it when France and Germany finally do implode but until then total denial will rule their thinking.
Why, yes hardliquor, now that you mention it, I am. My measured IQ is somewhere over 150.
Probably about average for Freepers.
And, ironically/paradoxically, I know quite a number of people who will now be able to send their kids to those very same colleges because of the President's tax roll cuts.
Respectfully submitted,
Wormwood (BA, Design)
