California is the leader, the picture of what is to come. MEGA succeeded here and opened up shop in Houston. Currently, at least half of the TV stations that will "auto-program" on your new TV are Spanish-speaking.

The strides in GOP registration are part of the plan to elect George P. Bush to POTUS when the time comes. At least, that is King Karl's plan.

The Vietnamese stations on AM aren't taking over decades old rock and roll stations.

For NEW rock in Houston there is now only 104 (if you call Britney Spears rock) and the "Buzz" 94.6(?) (if you call 10 year old Pearl Jam songs "new"). (2 stations)

Then you have the oldies stations 50s-70s KLDE (with a playlist of all of about 100 songs), 60s-80s "the Arrow", 80s "the Point", and 90s on 92.1. Not to mention all of the other oldies office background music (Michael Bolton, Billy Joel, etc. in an abomination they try to call soft "rock").

This is hardly the first "Spanish only" station taking over a large established radio station in Houston.

Why is "Spanish only" okay on so much of the radio dial? That seems more divisive than "urban" or other terms used to identify minority target audiences.

Why isn't there at least one Spanish rock station?

Why is the new station permitted to proclaim "Latino & Proud" when we all know that there would be protests outside a country station proclaiming "Anglo & Proud" or even just "Southern Pride"?

FOLLOWUP HOUSTON PING

Rock and Roll PING! email Weegee to get on/off this list (or grab it yourself to PING the rest)

Another active attempt to kill rock and roll (they tried it in the 1950s when Elvis went in the army, several singers died, Jerry Lee Lewis was sent home in scandal, Chuck Berry was arrested, Little Richard retired for gospel, and ASCAP pursued payola charges against BMI.

They replaced rockers with glamor boys (Fabian, Tab Hunter, Ricky Nelson, a "castrated" Johnny Burnette, Frankie Avalon, et al).

They tried to "move on" from rock and roll in the 1970s after Woodstock as sensitive "singer-songwriters", country-tinged "rock", soft rock (fern bar music), and disco were given a heavy push.

The tastemakers have no taste.

Cheap Channel just flipped a heritage rocker to spanish.

from FMQB...

Second CC Flip In Spanish Format Initiative

October 29, 2004

Keeping pace with their announcement this past September to significantly expand their commitment to Spanish-language programming, Clear Channel Communications, Inc. yesterday (10/28) at 5 p.m. PT flipped 36-year rocker KSJO-FM/San Jose to a new format dubbed "La Preciosa."

Mixing a wide range of regional Mexican hits and targeting the Bay Area's 25-54 adults, the new KSJO is touting the only local morning show, "El Genio Lucas," airing Monday through Saturday from 6-11 a.m., hosted by Alex Lucas, a 14-year radio veteran, Mexican native and longtime morning radio host in the Central Coast region .

"The Bay Area is one of the country's fastest growing Hispanic markets and we see an opportunity for KSJO to bring the community a new and exciting Spanish-language format, featuring the only local morning show in town," commented Kim Bryant, newly appointed Market Manager, San Jose for Clear Channel Radio. "In addition to a broad catalog of regional Mexican songs, KSJO-FM will also offer the local Hispanic community extensive local news, traffic and weather updates all in Spanish."

Another view of the company's decision to flip formats came from Clear Channel Communications Regional Vice President Ed Krampf, who told the local San Jose newspaper, The Mercury News, ``The fastest part of the market is Latin. And rock is having trouble. Young white kids are listening to Hip-Hop, and the other young segment is Hispanic. . . . Sometimes you just have to move on.''

Remember Lannie "?" and Dayna Steele?

Looks like Dayna has springboarded just fine after KLOL.

Houston Business Journal: Former deejay tuned into space-themed retail store - Well-known radio personality-turned entrepreneur Dayna Steele Justiz helped The Space Store log a fast take-off

For 14 years, former radio deejay Dayna Steele Justiz spent her days at the office spinning songs like "Stairway to Heaven." These days, she is peddling products that have been to the moon and back.

Justiz, a popular radio personality (as Dayna Steele) on Houston classic rock station KLOL 101.1 until 1996, had the idea of selling outer space toys, games and clothing stuck in her head ever since her agent in New York called one day to find out where he could get some space-related items for gifts.

and this freeper's top choice for remaining rock radio stations: THE BUZZ!!

Me too. The only FM stations I listen to anymore are 96.5, 106.9 and 94.5. Everything else is hip hop or spanish. I am seriously thinking about satellite radio as some here have suggested. I never listened to 101 but to have it lost to a foreign language just sucks. I'm just waiting for the hip hop 102 to go spanish and see some real fireworks. :)

The illegals always have their way. Next on the agenda blanket amnesty.

Don't worry, Bush is working on it. As a payback to his base, he's going to reward millions of criminals. grrrr

I don't care for Chris Baker either. I'm glad Sean is moving over to KPRC and hope they leave my favorite, Pat Gray, right where he is.

The 102 hip hop station won't go spanish because 102.9 is also Spanish. Could lead to confusion among listeners if they manually turn the dial.

Rock is dead and industry killed it.

The mantra is that kids listen to hip hop, hispanics are the largest growing base, etc etc. Those who listen to adult oldies (Sinatra, et al), classical music, and new rock and roll have been told to go F ourselves. And don't bother asking where "oldies country" is on the dial.

Of course the big selling point of satellite radio is "more choices, better programming, more extensive playlists". Why DOESN'T commercial radio offer this? They certainly COULD program the playlists better.

I see white people (a sizeable audience base with disposable income) being sold pay radio the way they were sold pay tv in the 1960s. Cable tv made sense in rural and smaller towns were tv reception could be extremely limited. With video rental services like Netflix, who needs to wait for a movie to go to a premium movie channel anymore?

Then maybe the rumors that Rush has been taking Spanish language courses are true.

When Humpy Parker was Sheriff of San Jacinto County he had four priorities for stopping vehicles. One of them was rock station bumper stickers. Humpy was sent to prison, after he was convicted of taking drugs/guns off people his thugs stopped then planting the guns/drugs on other people. A real piece of work.

If there's more money in Latino radio, then let the stations owners make their dough. If you don't like it, don't tune in. The anti-Capitalist mentality of the Social(ist) conservatives on this site really pisses me off! Almost as much as whiners of any race who get upset over stupid sh-t like this.

The rock and roll generation is getting old anyway...

Better Cuban Republicans than Noo Yawk Democrats who dominate Broward and Palm Beach. Besides, thank the wealthy Venezuelans, Colombians and Cubans for driving real estate in Coral Gables and Weston through the roof.

Comparing upper and middle class Latin American immigrants to impoverished Mexicans is like comparing apples and oranges.

Besides most of those "Cubans" you despise speak English. As a matter of fact, the second generation communicates predominantly in English, only speaking Spanish with their parents.

Miami-Dade County is the business capital of Latin America. I think its all the better for it.

I put on the new KLOL today since I was in my car. Also discovered that KRTS 92.1 has already flipped from the early 90s light rock "filler format" to also become a Spanish only station.

3 out of 10 FM pre-sets got reprogrammed today (with 3 different left of the dial stations already programmed and another added today); KRTS was in there twice (extending back to the classical format).

Next month I get to remove 790AM from my presets as well.

I guess that the answer is to flood the email boxes and phone lines DAILY of Houston's remaining English audience stations for requests for rock and roll, country, etc. we want to hear regardless if it is "out of format". Not necessarily oldies or obscure artists but the listeners have got to start demanding the radio they want.

Correction, 4 left of the dial stations already set and a 5th added today. This means that HALF of my presets are now on commercial free radio.

I hope advertisers wake up to this reality and consider spending all of their money with KSEV 700AM and KPRC 950AM.
