Friday April 12, 1861 4:30 AM - A mortar shell was fired over Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC. There were negotiations going on over Fort Sumter, and the union sent ships to reinforce Sumter during the negotiations. The South fired on Sumter before the reinforcements could get there. Hostilities were pretty much mutual.
