Paw-in-law has gotten ahold of an old Mossberg .22 rifle and wants to know how old it might be. I've been googlin and saw it was forsale in a 1938 catalog but don't know how long this rifle was produced.
Barrel is stamped :
O.F. MOSSBERG & SONS INC. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A NO. 46B 22 S-L-LR PATS. PDG
It also has a scope
MOSSBERG-NO. M4(b) 4 POWER-PAT. PEND.
Any idea how to find out how old this thing is ?
Seriously though any freeper gun nuts out there willing to point me to where I can find more about this ?

Is thayt a semi auto? Tube fed? Mag tube goes in in either the side of the stock or the buttstock?

I have a Mossberg Mdl 42M bolt action .22 S-L-LR. It has a spare 7 round magazine in the butt stock. W/O the magazine it is worth $75.00, w/ the extra magazine, $125.00. Some were used as military training rifles, others just as sporting guns.
Go to a gun shop and ask the 'Blue book'.
If it has no serial number, it is probably a US Army issue for training, and would be tetween 1935 or so and 1945.
I've got a 1938 Mossberg bolt action .22 with a tubuler magazine and original variable power scope. The date is molded into the trigger guard on mine. If yours is a 1938 it should have that also, one would think.

According to the books I have at hand, the only dating I can determine is that your 46B was made sometime after 1919 until whenever--if it had been made before then, the mark would have been "Oscar F. Mossberg". Shooter's Bible gives the website address as www.mossberg.com. Click on the Discontinued Models tab.
..dating? I expected the guns to be used @ the end of the ceremony (marriage), not @ the beginning.
;-) We did have a shotgun at my wedding how'd you know. It was a CVA muzzle loader kit the same paw-in-law had built. We got some wedding pics of him brandishing it at me whilst the groomsmen held me from fleein. Frankly the best photos of the whole weddin.....
I have a 44 U.S. model - not the prettiest rifle, but it's also all steel and wood (I think the only plastic part is the trigger guard).
I have several of grandpappy's shotguns and was wanting info on them, but haven't found a decent info site. Anyone know of a site that gives date and value?
