Upon a little research I find that last December 26th there was a horrific earthquake in Bam, Iran where upwards of 30-50K people died. Fast forward to a year later, December 26, 2004. The death toll is still rising. What makes on go hmmmm, is that both events happened right after Christmas and both events happend in areas where CHristianity is not prevelant.
Does this mean anything? Who knows.
Oh, come on.
Gee, I must have been hallucinating when they were showing a cemetery on CNN filled with new white crosses where tsunami victims were being buried.
A little off the deep end.
It's called a 'coincidence,'
Pathetic and offensive, so say I. If God is into the slaughter of innocent non-Christians (forget the "collateral damage of "Christians", then God is indubitably "dead."
Zackly. Everyone got hit in this one - Lankan Christians, Sumatran Muslims, Thai Buddhists, Malay Taoists (Penang is the Chinese island), Somali and Nicobar tribal pagans ... it was an ecumenical disaster that God somehow decided to allow. Got a big welcome party going on in heaven right now.
All the people who died because of the 'will of god'.
Too bad Falwell and Robertson didn't warn them over their sinful ways.
/sarcasm_off
That didn't take long, did it?
And Tamil Hindus, too!
I once saw a documentary interview with a pastor who was giving his Good Friday sermon at the time of the Alaska quake. Immediately after he read the passage about the earth shaking following Christ's death, the quake hit. That'll wake up the congregation!
That would make me never doze in church again.
There was also that church that was destroyed on Easter Sunday by the tornado.
Ah yes, didn't Mr. Falwell say something to the effect that in regards to te U-S, perhaps the protectve hand of g-d slipped and allowed 9-11.
I only posted the observational coincidence to provoke revelatory dicussion.
There is no offense toward those suffering an who have suffered in this great disaster. And while our hearts are filled with soorow now, were they filed with the same sorrow last December. Or were we only capable of sorrow when our television screens are filled with images?
My observational coincidence is intended for those who may believe there is to be a Second Coming of our Lord and if this is perhaps a sign. For those who may find such a discussion irrational or irresponsible, please click off the vanity link on your profile so as to not be offended.
Maybe this thread deserves to be moved to the Religion Forum. I find the speculative proposition a turd in the public square of FR, and detestable. YMMV.
Oldbie weirdness....
So much for his notes on the following week's sermon he wanted give on fire and brimstone....
"Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you." Maybe God is testing us.
ain't touching it, not with a rental-pole.
You're no fun. ;-)
I'm LOADS of fun, and I'm educational!
I'm a durn Infotainment!
You have higher ratings than CNN.
Something like that.
An at-least-then-popular blog that I used to read said something even more emphatic, with a specific reason. I highly doubt that the author received some special revelation about the subject, as either a warning before or something new after. Therefore, I highly doubt presumptuous-sounding assurances that the blogger knows the mind of God well enough to tell that something happened simply because We/They/You Are Surely Being Punished for one thing or another.
And you notice that I said "used to"; I haven't visited that blog since.
ROADKILL has higher ratings than CNN!
otoh, I have been favorably compared to Karl Rove AND Ann Coulter, so I must be doing something right.
(now... if only I can get Ann interested in being the mother of my children...)
Has anyone calculated, by these deft religious calculations when the next quake or flood will hit Jacksonville,FL? I have begun my workout program today and if its coming soon I won't push myself. On the other hand, maybe I'll just call Roberston and Falwell before I start my diet.
I wonder if tidal forces had an effect. The moon was full and it happened a few days after the winter solstice when the earth was stretched to the max.

People have been claiming that the end times are upon us,since they took Jesus down from the cross.Give it a rest! GOD says that no man will know and that you shouldn't even try to guess, when the second coming will be.

HA!!!LOL.
I laughed so hard I woke my dog up! Terrific.
Sorry about disturbing your doggy, though. :-(
Just what is God's plan? Have you ever wondered? Or are you one of those heathens I keep reading about. Or maybe even a deist?, Or maybe a religious non-christian? Maybe--gasp--maybe you are a mooselem!
"...Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together...!"
-------"What makes one go hmmmm....."
Give it a rest bro...you are dead wrong to make light of this tragedy...it is unbecoming of a good Christian. Your observation carries no weight. Maybe you should be thinking of ways that you can help others in their time of despair. I think the Lord will look upon you kindly for that.
As a postscript, you might wnt to realize that many of our Foundign Fathers were Deists. Do you respect our Founding Fathers?

No

God is not something to be figured out, like the instruction manual of an electrical appliance.
JMHO, FRiends.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Dan (I know you will 8^) but I have a lot of faith in your judgement on these matters).
It is true that God is sovereign over literally everything, including natural phenomena (Psalm 29:3; 115:3; Jeremiah 10:10). It is also true that national sin can bring national judgment, even among "heathen" nations (i.e. nations other than Israel; Genesis 15:16; Proverbs 14:34; Amos 12, etc. ad inf.).
However, I would not attach any such one-for-one significance to these calamities, lest I fall under the judgment incurred by Job's three "friends," who thought they could interpret every act of Providence for others.
Here is one reason why I am reluctant: another Biblical principle is this, and you may make bank on it: the greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility (Amos 3:2; Luke 12:48; Romans 2:1-2).
I say that to say this: if any nations on earth today deserve complete eradication because of their deliberate, defiant and arrogant rejection of abundantly-available truth from God, America would have to be right at the top of the list.
So let's not point fingers. Instead, let's humble ourselves, repent, and get to faith-born work.

My approach to these things is that God may very well be doing something on the mega scale, or it may just be that some places are more at risk to having these type of disasters (like there are only a few places on earth where you can get an earthquake in the M9 range, due to geography).
From my point of view of living the Christian life on a day to day basis, it doesn't matter. What matters is how I respond. Is my neighbor in need? God wants me to respond like a child of God to these who are his children, too. Although sometimes I wonder about the eschatology of it all, what matters most is that when he comes, he finds me being the faithful servant.
Most important from my point of view is that he never catches me being like the Pharisee in the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, pointing fingers at other people's unworthiness, and for me, I can slip into that trap, so I have to be vigilant and humble.
Off to fight the good fight!
That's right. And a day will come when earthquakes will have immediate eschatological significance; but the overall scene at that point will be, in my understanding of Biblical prophecy, pretty unambiguous.
So I picture myself in dialogue with someone from this country:
Q -- Is this earthquake a direct judgment of God for my people's sin?
A -- I don't know. But God is sovereign, and in His hand is your own life-breath, as well as that of your nation... as well as my own.
Q -- Should we should I repent of our sin and put our faith in Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God?
A -- Yes.
Dan
Yep...It's like when Jesus was talking about the men killed at the altar by Pilate and the people killed by the falling tower...not that they were great sinners, but that we always need to know that life is impermanent, and therefore, we need to be ready. Who knows when the Bridegroom is coming?
Como se dicé, "Get right with Jesus?"
That is how I see God at work in these kinds of situations. I believe that the earth is of God's design; therefore I believe that thingies like fault lines and other geological imperfections exist for a reason...not to punish us, but to challenge us when disasters inevitably occur.
