Don't you have to tell it the height and width of the graphic? Or have I just been wasting my time doing that?

Specifying the height and width of the graphic is not required. It is good practice when constructing an entire page, because the browser will build a box and reserve the space until the file is received.
If you want to scale the size of the pic, specify either the height or the width, but not both, and the aspect ratio is preserved.

No you don't, just make sure your pic is a friendly size ahead of time. I scan my family photos at an obscenely high resolution, but it would be impolite to post them here at those sizes :) Also consider the compression of the jpg's you're posting. Best Wishes.
