Lanett Woman Fatally Mauled In Pit Bull Attack
Owner Could Face Criminally Negligent Homicide, Manslaughter
POSTED: 3:43 pm CST February 7, 2005
LANETT, Ala. -- Authorities have said criminal charges could be filed against the owner of a pit bull after the animal attacked and killed an elderly Lanett woman Friday afternoon.
Police Chief Ron Docimo said 70-year-old Barbara Pilkington died from severe face and neck injuries when she was mauled at about 5 p.m. on a city street. Lanett Fire Chief A.J. Johnson said he was forced to kill the pit bull after the dog displayed aggressive behavior toward him.
Docimo said the Chambers County District Attorney's Office will determine if criminal charges are warranted. He said the owner, whose name was withheld, could face charges ranging from criminally negligent homicide to manslaughter.
Docimo said he also wants to know whether Lanett has an ordinance on the books, requiring all animals be properly restrained.
Tests are being conducted to determine if the dog had rabies.

I don't understand why Pit Bulls are always getting such terrible press, because if they are raised properly, they are very friendly, very sweet dogs. They're not any more vicious naturally than any other breed of dog.
This is a good flash movie about Pit Bulls. Includes a lot of well-researched statistics as well.

You forgot the /sarcasm tag.
If pits aren't vicious, why are there over 50,000 hits on Google for "pit bull attacks"?
Cuz they kill people, and people getting killed is still news in most markets.
because if they are raised properly, they are very friendly, very sweet dogs.
They usually aren't raised by people who want sweet dogs. If they wanted a sweet dog, they'd get a golden retriever.
They're not any more vicious naturally than any other breed of dog.
Unfortunately, selective breeding actually works. They are naturally built and tempered to be exactly as aggressive as they often end up. It's no accident... it's design.
I think I"ll let you argue this one.... :~D
It's really tiring going round and around on this issue.
Pitt bulls should not be allowed in neighborhoods. Ban these dogs!
Every story I read about a pitt bull that mauled someone has a quote from the owner, "I just don't understand. He is such a friendly dog."
Who did you say is going to carry the weight on this one this time around?
They get bad press because most people don't understand the difference between a pit bull raised for illegal dog fights and criminal purposes, and those raised by reputable breeders as pets. The breed was originally designed with dog fights in mind, but aggression towards humans was specifically NOT part of the pedigree (it would have made them harder for the handlers to approach). This just shows what can happens when criminals get ahold of them and instill aggressive behavior.
Nope, I did not forget the sarcasm tag.
In a study on dog bites, Pit Bulls ranked 4th from the bottom. That means that most breeds, including Labs, bite more people each year than Pit Bulls do.
Pit Bulls, however, because of their build and strength, are being trained as fighting dogs by their owners. A Pit Bull or ANY OTHER dog that is raised properly is a sweet dog. At the same time, an owner who hasn't got a clue and beats his animals as means of "discipline" will usually end up with a dogs that bites, or behaves viciously.
It is true that Pit Bulls are MOST LIKELY to kill someone that they bite, however, it's not true that Pit Bulls are a vicious breed. They are however, often raised to be vicious, or raised improperly by their owners. Many other breeds are as well. People get a "tough" dog like a Rottweiler or a Dobi to make it a protection dog but don't know diddly about training dogs or handling dogs, so their animals turn out to be vicious.
A very large percentage of the blame rests on the owners, NOT the dogs. Even www.dogbitelaw.com points out that fatal dog bites since 1975 were attributed to over 30 different dog breeds, not just those people usually consider "vicious".
Rottweilers, German shepherds, Huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, Chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas are also on the list of breeds that had killed the most people between 1975 and 1996. Funny enough, I don't see such a big deal being made about Saint Bernards as there is about Pit Bulls.
It just goes to show that those of us who are uninformed on the subject will just follow the news and scream, "Ban Pit Bulls" without having any kind of an understanding of what causes dogs to bite.
We got a new mixed breed puppy from the pound a few months ago. We can't seem to keep a pure breed out in this area. They tend to just disappear. The mutts the dognappers tend to leave alone. - Our puppy is a male, eats like a champion and is rather porky. As he's getting older, he looks like he might have a touch of pit bull in his makeup. He is sort of a sandy yellow, every bit a boy (we haven't had much experience with male dogs), has to have tons of toys to drag all over the yard, mistook a pair of my new leopard fur houseshoes for little animals every time my feet moved, so I had to just give them to him for his very own. He is not aggressive, very subservient to our older female dog, Dixie (she is the BOSS, but loves to play rough with him). He tries so hard, but he is SO messy and sort of like the big tough guy who is whupped down by a bunch of women. His name is Stoney (for Stonewall Jackson), but I'm beginning to think the name applies to his hard head. He has a very furrowed brow and his ears stick straight up and flop over.
Can anyone tell me what other dogs are yellow besides golden retrievers?
Funny you mention Retrievers because they are statistically more likely to bite people than Pit Bulls are.
See also my reply further down.
I think that statistic you gave might be slightly deceiving. I suspect it's regards to total numbers of bites, not relative. Labs are one of the most popular breeds of dog, so of course in terms of sheer numbers, Labs and Cocker Spaniels will be responsible for the most number of bites. They vast outnumber other breeds.
A lot of dogs are yellow in color. Golden Retrievers and Yellow Labs are two. Carolina Dogs often come in shades of gold or ginger as well, and there are tons of other breeds that are yellow / ginger / tan / gold.
It'd be easier to tell if you had pictures.
Of course it is in regards to the number of bites. The fact which one is a more popular dog does not matter, it just matters what number of dogs of that breed actually bite people. I'm sure if my Carolina Dog bit a person we'd be hearing that all Carolina Dogs are vicious attack dogs because there are so few of them and one just bit a person...
Family of pitt bull attack victim speaks out
The 10-year old Carthage boy who was brutally attacked by a pit bull on Saturday was back home with his family by Sunday.
Daniel Foster will have to endure re-constructive surgeries to repair damage done to his face.
Daniel's mother and his aunt say he's doing well considering the circumstances.
At home Daniel was heavily medicated and tired.
They feel the dog's owner should have done more to ensure an attack like this never happened.
Daniel left Childrens Hospital Medical Center with tough road ahead of him.
I know that you pit owners will never see the truth of your breed until your own dog kills somebody or somebody's pet.
Then you'll say what the dumb broad up the street said to me "He's such a nice dog. He's never done anything like this before."
And we're not talking about "biting." This is about mauling, ripping throats out and killing cats, dogs, and human beings.
Pits are bred to fight. If you have no problem keeping a ticking time bomb in your home, knock yourself out. I'd be curious to know what your insurance company thinks about you keeping a dog with such a high exposure to liability. Mine won't insure me if I have a Pit, a Rot, or a Doberman.
