Upon your clarifying, I must agree with your comparison.

Allow me to explain what I meant by, "produces films......"
The Academy is made up of the indivduals who are involved, to one degree or another, in making films. In my opinion, the industry, which is generally represented by the Academy, views itself as being unbias in it's effort to support the art of film making.

And for the most part, it does just that. It does support film making as a whole. It supported and promoted the concepts that allowed people like Mel Gibson to create the special features within "Passion." In fact, one of the original concepts of the Academy was to promote the science itself and to encourage growth.

Considering one of the earliest films "Birth of a Nation" glorified the KKK, I would say film making has come a tremendous distance.

And as with most things, the left to right tendencies within Hollywood will swing in the other direction soon enough. It always does.
