NVidia chipsets are no doubt faster than Via, most pc enthusiasts will use them over via, especially OC'ers. The only fault with that chipset was it sometimes was picky about the ram, but still heads up over Via.

That is all she can do. I think any software problem is unlikely, unless Norton is forbidding the mods during restore.
That is why I use safe mode when I do it.

Yikes...I replied to the post where you said you had tried the "Restore".
I've send many CD and DVD players break.
Usually due to the laser going bad.
If you have a CD cleaner...try it.
But you know....it could just be plain broke.

Take a look at that free middle connect that hooks to the hard drive...feel along both top and bottom of the connected , one side will have a raised marker of notch.... if you look at the CD plug area you will see that there will be a notch in the metal box that surrounds the pins.....that marker on the cable connector is to go into the notched area on the drive.
Be careful , gets your eyes close... so that the plug fits over the pins correctly before you apply the necessary pressure to set the plug.... you should do that rather than your husband as you would likely have the more sensitive touch and can feel resistance if the pins aren't lined up correctly!

"I got green flashing lights, lots of bells and whistles, and I can't see them. "
The drives will do that even with no ribbon cable cable connected. Only the power connecter has to connected for that because that is a function of the Drive and not the computer. The drive will look at and try to identify any CD that is inserted. The problem is that it can't tell windows what it found for one reason or another....Or else it trys to read the CD, but can't do so because it is malfunctioning. So in effect all that light tells you is that the CD Rom is "TRYING".

"If they don't "appear" with a restore from a month ago on a date that I know I burned CDs, what is it telling me?"
If you did a restore from a known good setup and your cd's worked at that time, then you have a hardware problem...

I have heard that. I have been lucky so far, but then I have only built two using Nvidia and went with memory that others had found to work.

Depends on how many services your running that use svchost. Usually 4 instances, but vary's. It wouldn't be the cause of your cd problem. Svchost is related to internet stuff.

Lets have her disconnect the drive at the middle of the cable first ,... followed by reconnecting it/
Close case power on and see......
and disconnecting the drive at the end of the cable
Close case power on and see......
followed by disconnecting and reconnecting the motherboard IDE connection .....
Close case power on and see......
And if none of that works.....?????
Thought of an additional option.....
Now we are going to work on a suspicion that the IDE controller on the MB has gone bad (Had that happen to me on an IBM box )
and now we are going to disconnect the hard drive from the mother board and plug the CD's into THAT IDE connector on the motherboard.... and ...reconnect both CD's to the cable....
and close the case power on , put in the Dell XP cd and see if we get some action from that.....

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
I'm embarassed to say, it worked. :-)
