This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's exactly what I'm wondering if it is. I've never seen a horse with a stifle problem, so not sure what to look for.
Could a vet tell, or is this going to be a guessing game? Would she have to see him when it happens to tell what is wrong?

I've been having problems too that prevent me from riding as well as once did. It's very frustrating to not be able to do the things that you once could. Know what I mean?
Don't know. I'm gonna ask the owner though. JUst got back from the stables. Friday the vet only had 4 days of meds with him and supposed to send me more out. Well, he didn't and I called and I was told he was out but sending something he liked better. I wasn't too happy with changing what was working but my vet said it would be ok since both sulfa. It's called Tucoprim and a PITA. It is very light and doesn't mix well. Okie wasn't crazy about it either. Tomoorow I'm gonna mix it with a little water and try to make a paste and then mix with syrup before putting it on the feed. Okie gettin spoilt. He would only eat with us holding the bucket. He's got that sparkle back in his eye too:')
I've seen a horse with a stifle problem, and from your description, that's exactly what it sounds like. My old trainer's TB's stifle would lock all the time just like that. He'd hope a few strides, or buck to try to get it unstuck, and then just continue on like nothing happened.
A vet could probably tell, or diagnose it just from what you described.
The vet ought to be able to palpate the knee and observe his gait in hand to see if that's what it is. It's probably a little ouchy. I'll bet it's been brought on by lack of condition like you say. His muscles and tendons have gotten tight and he just needs some long slow work to build him back up. My mare that had the stifle problems had the locking up thing, but she also had trouble going down hill and was uncomfortable with having her hind legs held up and out by the farrier.
LOL!!! Now THAT'S a truck! I'd hate to hafta put fuel in it though! ;o)

We have a guy that has hummer limos around here. 3 miles to the gallon. Just 200 dollars the 1st hr and then 100 an hour .
I've used Tucoprim. It's good stuff. I never had any problem getting any of mine to eat it. I guess my sweetfeed had enough molasses in it to make it stick. You might try buying some cheap molasses at the grocery and mixing it with that. A couple of years ago, Tennessee came down with the heaves after I got a batch of dusty hay and I had to give him some kind of powdered antihistamine, I can't remember what it was called, but it must've tasted horrible coz he wouldn't touch it. The molasses worked for that, but I had to do like you said and mix it into a paste with the medicine and give it to him in a wormer syringe. The molasses made it stick to his tongue too.
I haven't rode in a couple of weeks and then rode a couple hrs last night. I'm getting achy and sore. If I ride often I'm ok but after about a week same old stuff:'(

No thanks. I've seen a picture of a head on collision between a Hummer and a Dodge Ram. There wasn't much left of the Hummer, and the Dodge looked fixable. I think I'll steer clear of the H2's, but I think this truck might hold it's own.

I know exactly what you mean. This has been a really rough winter for me. I've felt pretty bad the whole winter. But I'm back 100% now I'm pretty sure:)....getting old is not fun.
Not sure what your problmes are, but I'll tell you what helped me, and maybe it will help you. I was hurting so bad all over, OTC pain relievers were doing nothing. Remember when I mentioned I tried calcium.
Altho I wasn't saying mcuh about how bad I felt, my husband knew something was wrong and found this web site for me:

He filled out the questionaire for me:) and then ordered the vitamins that they recommended. They also sent a book called "The Schwarzbein Principle" I think the info I got from the book more then anything helped.
MY HUsband and I HAVE CANGEd our eating to the recomendations in this book, and we have both been truly amazed. Mack has lost 20 lbs, I've lost about 6, and loosing weight was realy not even the goal. I just wanted to feel better. I can't recommend it enough as a must read if you really want to start feeling better. I'm sure the vitamins they sent help too, but what this book will tel you about nutrition is amazing and sensible. Not some wacked out diet plan. My kids have even started changing their eating habits after seeing how much better me and their dad have been feeling:)
You can buy the book at any bookstore. You should give it a read.

Boy, you got that right! Did they tell you to shake it up real good before you scooped it? It settles and gets real packy so you need to fluff it up before dosing so you won't give too much.
