Sorry Miss Feather, I don't examine the process too closely, perhaps for fear that I might interfere with it.
I can tell you, though, that all of my poems start with a thought or image that I want to explicate or extrapolate.
I also wish to agree with Sandburg in post 1038, I love dust and mist. (Hmm, I know I've done dust ... but I am short of a poem on mist. ... Hmmm ... )

I am sure we all start with a mental image, a smell, an event, something that triggers our process.
Trigger is the correct word to use. The thought precedes the act in everything we do.
I don't think about the process that much either, I get distracted too easily and try hard to stay on the topic.
The Sandburg poem is a fabulous poem. I had not seen it until now.
I have used mist in some of my poems, but did not take it to the level that Sandburg has.
