One good thing
April 7, 2005 | self / vanity

Now that I am getting to be an old man (age 57 is just around the corner) and I have made many mistakes in my life, I have one piece of advice for those of you who are younger:

Each day, try to do one good thing.

This is not something you seek credit for.

"Each day, try to do one good thing."

It's made my life worth living.

On monday a customer bounced a check to me. Today, after some research I found their place of employment. I walked in and confronted my "customer" in front of other coworkers and got my money. This was the one "good thing" I did for society today.

That was the right thing to do and it was what you needed to do, but it isn't what I was talking about.

Sorry, I just needed to vent. I'm 29 and live on Cape Cod. People here are VERY rude. My parents taught me "yes sir, yes please, no thank-you's" and general politeness which rarely get returned, but I still never forget to say them.

I held a door open for an older guy at a convenience store the other day, probably in his 80's and he looked at me and said "Thank-you sir. I'll see you same place, same time tomorrow." Made me chuckle. Your advice is good.

Fifty Seven just around the corner is hardly old.

There, I did my good thing to a guy facing fifty seven just around the corner from another facing same.

This is part of being a Boy Scout...Do a good deed daily. If you seek credit or acknowledgement, it doesn't count. It carries on the rest of your life.

I'll be 60 in June. Last night I stopped and got gasoline and walked toward the office to pay for it. I reached the door at about the same time as a young woman (about 30 years old) She grabbed the door and held it open for ME.

I felt ancient.
