Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo are set to star in the thriller "Zodiac," Variety reports.

The film, being directed by David Fincher ("Seven"), is based on the true story of Zodiac, the infamous serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco for 25 years.

Gyllenhaal will star as Robert Graysmith, the journalist and author who wrote the books "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked," upon which the film is based.

Mark Ruffalo will take on the role the lead investigator, and Downey Jr. will play a reporter.

I've read Graysmith's book--it's a pretty thorough account of the Zodiac murders. I hope the movie doesn't take liberties with the facts ("What?! Hollywood take liberties with facts??!!) because Graysmith took pains to tell it as accurately as possible.

Graysmith's first book, or second book?

I think it was his first--the yellow-cover 'Zodiac'.

I think that the first movie about Zodiac (from 1970) had Doodles Weaver (Sigorney's uncle) as the wacky neighbor.

No joke. That film even put forth two suspects in the crimes with "the real killer" getting away in the end.

They set up a watch at that movie in SF, because they fully expected him to go watch it.

Did he attempt to kill the filmmakers afterwards for making such a lousy movie?

No, he was probably happy to get the attention. He did say the Exorcist was the best satirical comedy he had ever seen.
