The episode about the "Mother-Boy" competition is a hilarious classic. Yet again, another great FOX show dies an early death.
"WORST. EPISIODE. EVER."
When I think of shows like "Jurassic Bark," I am reminded of something that comic book writer Dave "Cerebus" Sim wrote over 20 years ago in a foreward to one of his collections.
In short, Sim wrote that a lot of sitcoms, funny comic strips, etc., would do "very special eps" because it was infinitely easier to fake drama than comedy.
Drama, Sim wrote, was easy to fake. You throw in some death and suffering and people get it. Even if it doesn't move them, they understand you what you were trying to do.
Comedy, on the other hand, was tough, he said. People either laugh or they don't. If they don't laugh, they didn't get it.
I think a lot of sitcoms coast on the above theory for years.
BTW, "Happy Days" jumped the shark long before Fonzie actually did it.
Once they started injecting politics into the show it jumped.
Lisa is like a radical leftist and the moral center of the show and the smart one, and that made it annoying.
Unless your a left wing politically obsessed person, who drinks, eats, and sleeps leftism, your going to get annoyed with the heavy doses of politics in the show.
It was much better when they tried to center the show around the family, with Homer being a caring dad (as opposed to now where he is both stupid and selfish), Marge being a good mom, and the kids bickering and fighting but still able to come together.
Now the show is just over the top and seems more concerned with getting cheap shots in on a big chunk of its viewers.
I wanted to kill myself.
Tonite's Family Guy is pretty good, I saw it last week, its the first new one, and the opening is hilarious.
Simpsons is still good, better than King of the Hill and the awful American Dad. South Park still kicks ass, the Die Hippie episode is an instant classic.
That's an excellent point. Looking over the older eps, Homer was stupid, but he loved the kids and tried to do what was right most of the time. The humor came from the fact that, while he tried his best, he was just incompetent.
Now, he's so selfish and callous he makes Andrea Yates and Joel Steinberg look like models of good parenting.
I like King of the Hill. Not as much as I used to, since they are starting to make Hank a bit stupider with every ep but it's still watchable.
Simpsons sucks now. Family Guy is overrated and New Family Guy will suck. Futurama was the only show with some vestige of creativity, and it's off of the air
What the Deuce? Family guy overrated? It is the only show on TV that makes me laugh out loud. Best show ever. Brian and Stewie rule.
Tonite's Family Guy has some great jokes at Mel Gibson's expense, will probably piss a few folks off here, but it is funny.
I've never watched it. As soon as my eyes spot that peculiar shade of yellow, my forefinger taps the Up button on the remote. It's an automatic response mechanism.
Lighten up, everybody. It's a cartoon.
Lighten up, yourself. We're all just having a friendly chat about TV.
It's not like we're demanding that Bush order the TV station firebombed or something.
;-)
Family Guy is great.
I love how many things just come completely out of left field at the least appropriate times (Peter to Brian: it's times like these that I'm sad that you're going to die 30 years before I do). Unlike so many comedies today, it's unpredictable.
Are you suggesting some of us should be lighter in the loafers?
"The Simpsons" is unfortunately long past its prime -- a combination of too many celebs appearing as themselves (Mel Gibson, NSynch, etc.), overt preaching and subpar gimmicky plots (Marge the bodybuilder). I haven't watched regularly in years, because every time I catch an episode I'm disappointed. The quality really started falling off after season 8 -- season 9 had the "Armin Tamzarian" episode and the anti-gun episode, to name a few memorable clunkers.
"Family Guy" is fun for what it is, but we'll see if it can stay fresh even half as long as "The Simpsons" did. And if the pilot of "American Dad" represents the tone of the series, it's DOA -- just a stale clone trying to ape "Family Guy's" formula and falling flat in the process.
I really miss "Futurama."
You know what I haven't had for a while? "Big League Chew".
I like The Simpsons, Family Guy and Futurama. All good shows, if any of the shows ever bother me I just won't watch them anymore..
