Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 11, 2005 - glower
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/11/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/11/2005 5:59:06 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

glower \GLOW-er ("OW" as in "cow")\ verb

to look or stare with sullen annoyance or anger

Example sentence:
Mariah crossed her arms and glowered at Jeff, making it perfectly clear that she'd had enough of his teasing.

Did you know?
Do words of uncertain origin make you scowl? If so, "glower" may put a frown on your face, because only part of its history can be validated. The well-established part of its story leads us to Scotland, where "glower" (or "glowren," to use the older Scottish form of the word) has been used since the late Middle Ages. Originally, the word meant simply "to look intently" or "to stare in amazement," but by the late 1700s, glowering stares were being associated with anger instead of astonishment. Beyond that, however, the history of the word is murky. The most we can say is that "glower" is a distant relative of Middle Low German "gluren," which means "to be overcast," and of Middle Dutch "gloeren," meaning "to leer."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Better late than never-

Why is it when the 'rat party
Has fallen out of power
That they behave like children
Who sulk, pout and glower?

And keep hammering the same old message
Of socialism, free circuses and bread
When they ought to find a new line
And appeal to the middle class instead

When they want to take our money
And leave us with just crumbs
How can they wonder why we grow tired
Of supporting welfare queens and bums?

(Robt double checks .....)

Wonders, innocently, "How did she know my cookies were topless? (Er, topperwearless.)"

Am I late today, VRWC? I never heard the bell ring. I cross my heart. I was wondering why I had the playground all to myself today. I've been swinging and sucking on my hair. Wanna smell?

Hi xs. :-) Did I miss cookies?

We closed on the house in SA, and the new owners will begin moving in over the weekend-went to dinner at a favorite restaurant out here to celebrate with my realtor neighbor and her husband, and Husky girl is chowing down on the order of french fries we brought her as a treat. I'm both glad and sad that that house is sold-lots of good memories of bringing up my little one there.

Hey, xs and patton-hubby found out the other day that the looney woman next door to the house we just sold is a Falls Churcher-we knew that he was from Oklahoma and she was from somewhere in Virginia, but not the specifics. When hubby was over there today after work checking that the yard looked nice, her jerk husband came over and asked hubby why the for sale sigh was down (duh), and hubby gleefully told him that we had sold to a family with 4 little kids. He got downright ugly with hubby, chiding him for selling to "some trash like that"-huh? Funny, I don't remember HIS kids being such angels. Well, he told hubby that his wife wants to move back to Falls Church where she is from because it is getting so neighbors move and sell their house to just anyone who can pay, and she doesn't want to live around that any more. What is the deal there? Good-I hope they leave soon, but sorry to inflict the looney tune and her assh*** husband on Falls Church...

LOLOLOL - what is her name? Bet dollars to doughnuts I know her.

Three generations - one town - 2.2 square miles...

Oh, heck. Since Ryan is about to be a junior in HS, I guess I have to say FOUR generations....

Now, my 4-yo daughter (Kelly) was having trouble with plea.

So I showed her how.

Then I realised, everyone in the house was looking at me...

My ten yo, Chris, pipes up - "Dad, why do you know how to do that?"

Oh, crap.

Well, um ...uh, you might be surprised.

I know everyone in Westerlo, NY dating back generations.

And many in Herkimer, NY.

But I REALLY know Falls Church. I know where the Eisenhower's lived, I know who built Lanier Place, I know every house in the city...

Picked my son up from a study date recently. Who lives there now?

So-&-So. "Oh. I used to date her mother."

LOLOL

He's got a face only his mother could love. Actually I think both of them are unbelievable suck-ups to their respective parties. I preferred Dennis.
