i think he COULD see it. i have been in a plane landing and national and you can SEE the monuments, they are recognizable from the air, it is a crystal clear day today. i don't see why he could NOT see where he was.
In all honesty - especially given nature of aviation - your statement WAS proper - I just like the amusing sound of it.
