'24' Promises Surprising Finale
foxnews ^ | 5/22/05 | foxnews

Twenty-two hours down, two to go. "24" (search) plans to end its fourth heart-stopping season with a bang Monday night — a two-hour finale filled with suspense and surprises. "It's my favorite season ender — it's just been the most fun and I think the most surprising end. I'm not gonna tell you who dies, or if someone dies. But I will say it's a surprise," Howard Gordon, the executive producer of "24," told FOX News.

Aside from the finale (8 p.m. EDT on FOX), one of the biggest mysteries about the show is whether its star, Kiefer Sutherland (search), will be back. "I'm actually not gonna answer that. That's how — it's actually a very relevant question and it's one that I think people will be surprised at," Gordon said.

So how does "24" remain one of TV's hottest shows, four seasons later? Keeping fans on the edge of their seats, one hour at a time. "If you're not a little rattled at the end of the hour, it's not been a good show," Gordon said. And some of the threats confronting Jack Bauer (Sutherland) and the rest of L.A.'s Counterterrorism Unit are eerily realistic. "I long for the day when it goes back to being a fantastical work of fiction, as opposed to something that is actually mirroring events that are taking place in the world," Sutherland told FOX News.

For example, Bauer and his colleagues at the Counterterrorism Unit (known on the show as CTU) are currently in hot pursuit of Islamic terrorists who have launched a nuclear missile. CTU agents are trying to determine where exactly the missile may land and to round up the terrorists within the United States who are behind the plot.

I don't get to watch too much TV. I've seen many threads on it here at FR.

Is 24 the TV version of Tim Clancy?

Okay... I'm a 24 geek. I was so disappointed that I missed episode 3 of season 3 that I just stopped watching and waited for the DVD set to come out so that I could watch all the shows back to back (3 "sick days" at work to make it through a season).

I've watched every minute of season four, and this promises to be a GREAT season finale. It's simply the best show on TV. But that's just one man's silly little opinion.

I already know how it ends.

I signed a little piece of paper that prevents me from revealing the plot.

Watch it.

There will be some surprises.

WARNING! Spoiler:

The nuclear-tipped cruise missle stalks and threatens Kim Bauer.

(Show concludes with Kim defusing the bomb, dealing with radioactive heat by stripping down to her underwear.)

Yeah, like stealing a stealth fighter and shooting down Air Force One are at the top of the national security threats facing the country.

I love the show...I suspend belief for an hour each week and enjoy it for what it is... but that comment is absolutely asinine.

Here's my other big gripe. With all of Jack's superhero skills, the one I want the most, is being able to get to someplace in down town LA, and back to CTU... in a black SUV... and then back into the field, some place else in DT LA...in less than an hour.

Gosh, I hope she has to run down another bumpy hillside wearing a tight t-shirt :)

Actually, I have it on good authority that the missile will change its mind, do its patriotic duty, and take out Howard Dean.

The show is great for a cartoon.
The major plot twists are impossible but it is fun.
There is absolutely no way anyone could steal an armed stealth fighter.
There is no way they could get the transponder code for the football emergency beacon.
There is no way they could drive through the desert at night right to where they want to be without constant backtracking and trying new ways.
Why didn't Jack have the helo just shoot both jeeps while they were siting outside the power plant and failing that just have the helo shoot both jeeps as they left the power plant.
Corrugated tin is not bullet proof.
A little bit of brush in a can will not set off ten rounds in one minute. The first round that goes off will scatter the rest out of the fire.
It is beyond comprehension why Jack just walked Marwan out of the building that was just a few minutes ago a terrorist base. Drive the vehicles inside, out Marwan in, then speed out.
The show could be far more intense if it was believable.
There's more implausible stuff but this is a start.
