Windows computer servers tie with Unix in revenue
The worldwide computer server market grew 5.3 per cent to $12.1 billion in the first quarter, with revenue for servers running the Microsoft Corp Windows operating system equalling that of Unix servers for the first time, market research firm IDC said on Friday.
Revenue for Windows servers grew 12.3 per cent to $4.2 billion in the quarter while unit shipments grew 10.7 per cent. Unix servers saw 2.8 per cent revenue growth to $4.2 billion while unit shipments increased 5 per cent.
"The equal level of spending in both segments this quarter showed that Windows servers are gaining traction in the enterprise server space with a combination of deeper investment and richer configurations," said Jean Bozman, vice president of Enterprise Computing.
IDC said that overall server revenue grew for the eighth consecutive quarter as customers invest further in new infrastructure.

And the Mac continued its trend of insignificance within the marketplace ...
That seems worthy of a mention.
The Mac marketing people are idiots, always have been.
Their product is clearly superior- always has been.
But now they need to play catch up. First they need to run ALL microsoft software (how hard could this be?)
Then they need to cut their price to AT LEAST 25% less than any Microsoft PC>
Then advertise like hell- your existing software will run and you pay less. They could take over the market in 2 years.
I'd like to give them at least one good hint: Drop the shark-jumping desperation so evident in stunts like declaring the PowerMac illegal for export -- because it's so damned fast!
Do a better job of apples-to-apples (pun intended) comparisons using industry benchmarks. Picking a couple of heavily Mac-optimized applications to beat Wintel machines over the head with just ain't gonna cut it. This will begin to heal their badly damaged industry credibility.
Along with the rest of the company's management.
Their product is clearly superior- always has been.
Macs are like Henry Ford's Model T color selection.
But now they need to play catch up. First they need to run ALL microsoft software (how hard could this be?)
Very. Even a Wintel machine can't perform this feat 100% of the time.
Then they need to cut their price to AT LEAST 25% less than any Microsoft PC
Apple would be cutting their own throats doing this. After all, it is because Apple doesn't allow clones (or limited clones) that keeps their prices (and margins) so high. If they allowed clones, and lowered their prices, they wouldn't survive long enough to gain market share.
Then advertise like hell- your existing software will run and you pay less. They could take over the market in 2 years.
They are marketing like hell, but only the product that makes them even more money than a Mac - the iPod. How many dancing silhouettes with white earbuds have you seen on TV?
Windows wipes floor with Linux

Windows is taking the server OS market by storm - and Linux has no hope of catching it, according to market researcher IDC.
Its latest quarterly server survey found that income from sales of Microsoft Windows servers even matched enterprise Unix server revenues.
Linux servers posted their 11th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, with year-over-year revenue growth of 35.2 per cent and unit shipments up 31.1 per cent. Enterprises are continuing to expand the role of data centre-based Linux servers into an ever-broadening array of workloads with both commercial and technical workloads.
However, IDC also reported that Microsoft Windows servers also showed strong growth, as revenues and unit shipments grew 12.3 per cent and 10.7 per cent respectively, year over year - from a much larger installed base than that of Linux. Significantly, quarterly revenue of $4.2 billion for Windows servers represented 34.4 per cent of overall quarterly factory revenue, pulling even with quarterly revenue in the Unix server market.
Windows Server 2003, DataCenter Server, and Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition are all selling well, according to IDC's enterprise group chief Jean S Bozman.
Bozman also said that she could not see Linux overtaking either Windows or Unix in the foreseeable future, mainly because Linux is starting from such a small base. As a result, she could not project out far enough to see Linux overtaking either of the other two main OSes.
How are macs choices any worse than say dells?
Only you could take a perfectly good Windows/Linux flameware and turn it into a Mac/Windows flamer.
25% less than any Microsoft PC? Isn't it enough that Apple delivers systems that are price-competitive with higher-end PC manufacturers like Sony and IBM--especially in the notebook segment? I've been pricing notebooks lately, and for the features that I want (12" screen, <5 lbs., min 512MB RAM, optical drive, large > 4200RPM HD, discrete video, extended warranty, Bluetooth), the Powerbook is priced very competitively with PC counterparts from Sony, IBM, and others. Try getting all that for much less than two grand from any quality manufacturer. Getting a unit for less than that means you start cutting corners and quality.
First they need to run ALL microsoft software (how hard could this be?)
Umm very hard! and compleatly out of apples hands. The two systems are compleatly differnt...
Yep. Extremely childish, too.
Ill dig up references when you can find a post where I said Linux was without flaws, Ive been waiting since last year..
This is the server market, and Apple has only recently had good contenders. Given that server market momentum is quite slow, I'd expect their servers to take a while to gain traction, even though the XServe gives far more bang for the buck than a Windows 1U. They're already doing very well in the supercomputer cluster market, where Windows basically blows, and their XServe RAID storage solution was recently recommended by Oracle. They're getting there.
Here's the bad news. Increases in Linux sales are coming at the expense of traditional Unix. Meanwhile, Windows sales continue to climb ... so you have to wonder whether Linux is merely treading water in the 'nix market. Interesting.
