Advice on buying a pony?
July 28, 2005 | self / vanity

Posted on 07/28/2005 7:00:27 PM PDT by The Other Harry

I am very close to buying a pony – imminent, as in possibly within the next few days – and this message is very much off topic.

The price of the pony is about $750, and she appears to be very nice. Stabling would be around $75. She is not a shetland, but more like a small horse. (Not sure of terms here.) Her temperament seems very good. Gentle, which is what I want.

If any of you can give me any advice on what to look for or look out for, I’ll take it. I have no experience with anything equine.

It might be best to do this by FReepmail, as I don’t think many others would be interested.

You might want to start out with an older horse. The younger ones tend to be a bit fiesty. Also if you get a bigger one you could ride it. Just a thought. We know of some older trail horses for sale, inexpensive and dead broke if anyone is looking.

And BTW learn the meaning of each of these:

Buck

Rear

Kick

As you will learn the real meaning of each, first hand!

This is true. :-)

He needs to start out with drug and alcohol detox, then some counseling, then a job, THEN maybe a horse.

Here's what you need. First forget about a pony, they're too expensive. Get a big dog. If your kid is stupid or has poor vision, they'll never know.

Do the two young girl basketball players you watch know you posted their names and schools on the internet? I bet they'd rightfully be very alarmed by that.

Their names were already published in a state journal and in many newspaper articles.

Drugs are not an issue with me. I have done the alcohol detox and the counseling.

Bill has his 12 steps. I've been working on mine. There is a lot of overlap, but they are not quite the same.

I think we've all been too kind and gentle with Harry, somebody needs to slap him and get him out of this fixation with children. I'd hate to think that posters on FR have unintentionally been enablers in all of this.

One more time...

I have no fixation with children. My problem is booze.

Learn to read.

The trouble with ponies is often that they are too little for an adult rider to ride and train them

Technically, it's a "pony" if it's anything under about 14 hands. Harry's already described it as "a small horse," so I think it's probably on the upper range of "pony."

That said, the rest of your points are right on the money.

Being published in the context of emotional internet musings by drunk old bachelors who like to watch little girls play and who try to think of neat things to buy to attract neighborhood kids is an entirely different kind of creepy. If you don't know why, read the news.

With all due respect, TOH, if you have done the alcohol detox and gone back to drinking, you need to start over. One does not go back to "square one drink status" once he/she has gone through detox, and you know that. Bill has 12 steps and they work, you have "how many" and they aren't working. Leave animals, all animals, out of the equation until you get healthy.

The Connemara pony, largest of the pony breeds, can be 15h, although not average. They usually aren't larger than 14.2h.

Harry, get a life, a real one. Get off the internet and get out and meet people, adults. And quit trying to convince us that your drinking isn't a problem. I read your posts and you do talk about children alot. You never mention adult friends. What are we supposed to think?
Well, I have a real job to go to now and I'm running late. Oh and I'm older than you are and even was temporarily disabled for a while. So quit playing the victim...it's boring.

I completely disagree.

I like children (except in restaurants), birds, and animals. They are one of my personal steps.

I get along with most adults -- those who are not using cell-phones.

I have several good adult friends.

As for adult meetings and groups, it is hard for me to think of anything more boring. TV comes close.

A pony would certainly be better.

Now it is time for me to go down and see if my property taxes have been paid. They should have been, but I tried to pay them electronically this time.

I'll go visit the pony next.

You have no right to include other people's children or animals in your personal 'steps'. They are not props, Harry.

Could be that my posting tactics have been wrong.

I tend to leave my personal life out of it. I get pretty personal, but some of it is too close.

I am relatively normal. I am honest and very nice. Just bored.

I know where to draw the line. I draw it.

You fixation is fast nearing the realm of revolting.

You are imagining things.
