The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Strange.... but could be something as easy as an insect bite - don't you have them blood drawin' bugs down there?

HA! What blood drawin' bugs DON'T we have down here?! Funny you should mention that because one time he did actually have one of those big ol' B52 horse flys bite him on his goober and he pulled it up inside his sheath before it could turn loose. I have never seen a horse tap dance before, but darned if he wasn't doing the closest thing to it I've ever seen, at least on the hind end. I was standing right there and he starts swinging his butt in my direction, looking at me like "DO something!". I had to laugh at him first, but I did reach up in there and get it out. It was as big as the first joint of my thumb so I know it musta hurt BAD! But it was still funny. ;o)

Well, hopefully that's it this time. I hate to think of anything serious happening down there.

Well, I better get busy... My husband made a wise crack at me this morning about 'whatever it is I do all day' and it made me mad, but I think I deserved it. I've been lazy lately. So I'm gonna clean the house and barn today.

After some breakfast, and one more cup of espresso....

Drinks lots of it. There's nothing like a little high octane to get you going with the cleaning.

All because of Ty Pennington, of course.

You would really be getting your "fix" here today. The local TV station is live at the scene. He's pretty funny to watch. Kids don't have school today, so there is one heck of a crowd. 3 big backhoes and that house was down in 10 mins. It's pretty cool to see the "behind the scenes"......I better get off my butt and pack..

Thanks for the info. I will have to call the vet then. I ran out of the ear stuff, I had for my other lab. Her ears were worst, because I swam her more. I sure hope you find out what is wrong with pony.

Feeling much better, thanks. In the 60's here also, with sunshine. I'm off today 'cause I have to work tomorrow so I'm just taking it easy.

An equal opportunity employer, no doubt -- though it does reinforce earlier statements in the job description.

Call me a skeptic about it's authenticity. I can't imagine anyone would answer that ad. ;~\

Better than starving, and it gets the kids off the street corners and out of the saloons while providing a sense of adventure. Call it Outward Bound circa April 1860 to November 1861.

* * *

The Pony Express sign above was actually an advertisement in a California newspaper, looking for "young fellows ... willing to risk death daily." 183 people are known to have ridden for the Pony Express. We say "people" and not "men" because the youngest was 11. Incredible.

Riders were paid $25 per week, with new riders taking over every 75 to 100 miles. Fresh horses were provided every 10 - 15 miles at each of approximately 165 stations. The trail ran almost 2,000 miles through what is now Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada.

The Pony Express was formed to provide the fastest mail delivery between Sacramento and St. Joseph, Missouri. It ran for only a year and a half, the major purpose of it being to attract publicity so as to win a million dollar U.S. government mail contract for the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company.

The owners spent $700,000 on the Pony Express and ended with $200,000 in debt. The million dollar contract was lost. But the legend lived on!
