There are 500 dogs in very dire circumstances in Mountain Home, Arkansas today.

There are ONLY 6 people onsite and they’re desperate for capable people who are experienced with aggressive dogs to help with this most inhumane situation. They are begging for capable bodies who can help clean and care for the dogs.

Many dogs have gone cage crazy and are now trying to attack their handlers. Dogs are sick and dying and have no medical care. Young puppies are being exposed to filth, parasites and disease.

If you have shelter experience and can get there, please contact Donna@badrap.org IMMEDIATELY for the info you need to go help.

Please crosspost widely and QUICKLY, this situation is DESPERATE and HAPPENING NOW.

Even if you can only go for one day, DO IT. Even if you can't go until Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, DO IT. But the sooner the better!

Animal control equipment would be useful if you have it.

Photos and Full Story Here

The short version is that a well-intentioned group offered to take in Katrina dogs but they were incapable of caring for them. Dogs were left in their crates for potentially weeks, exposed to the weather -- out in the open with no shade, no shelter from wind, rain, heat, cold. Up to 500 dogs at this site. Operators were arrested a day or two ago, but released on bail.

If you don't have shelter experience or experience with aggressive dogs, you MAY still be useful... Please contact me directly by posting here or by Freemail if you can go there immediately. Tell me your experience and/or what you're willing to do, and I'll see if we can put you to use.

Again, please crosspost widely!! This need is IMMEDIATE.

If you want to help with Katrina dogs -- NOW is your chance!!

I'm a big supporter of simultaneous animal and people rescue. But at some point euthenasia becomes the only humane option. Sound like that point is being reached.

I wish I could help. This is a compounded tragedy.

Where the hell are the owners and caretakers of these animals?

This sounds like a job for the Humane Society of the United States.

Well, it sounds like it, but they only raise money, not care for animals.

It looks like mostly pit bulls to me. I'm no expert. Gosh, it will be hard to find people willing to care for these aggressive dogs and give them a good home. Looks like the rescuer became overwhelmed by it all. Those scenes are very sobering indeed.

I love dogs, but, I'm sorry, I wouldn't drive 30 minutes to care for aggressive dogs.

Why would anybody?

It's time to consider the ultimate option for these animals.

It's time to consider the ultimate option for these animals.

Even if that ends up being the case for many, they still need help to make that an end to cruelty and not just more of it.

I agree these are the absolute hardest to handle, and are probably there because few other shelters would promise adopt out rescued pit bulls.

Because humans screwed this up, it is up to humans to clean it up.

It's time to consider the ultimate option for these animals.

I don't get this "just kill them" mindset. Bloody hell, people. You don't euthanize children for being screwed up by stupid "adults." So why should it be acceptable to do as much with a difficult animal?

you need to contact the korean embassy, they can help.

You need to contact your sense of decency. It appears to be MIA.

I'll try to answer as many questions as I can, but I need to crosspost this in a few other places so I'll be back after I answer a few posts.

Yes, we may be approaching the point of humane euthanasia, sadly. The details are unclear on how this situation came about, but an investigation is underway. For now though, the immediate need is to care for the dogs and get them shipped to other shelters where they can be cared for until their owners are either found or they can be adopted, if possible. If not... well... we know the outcome of that.

I agree with your sense of human responsibility for these animals. But an aggressive dog is not a good pet. They are a danger to their own family, as well as the neighborhood, if they get loose. We read about it all too often. I'd love to say all these broken souls should be given sanctuary for their lives, but there are just so ~many~. Far more pit bulls suffer in every one of our large cities, than there are people who are qualified to own them.

No, its still here. Your sense of humor, however is MIA. btw, why would anyone not be putting down aggressive animals?

Regarding the owners: Hundreds of individual circumstances caused these owners to leave without their pets. Ranging from being forced to leave Fido behind at gunpoint, taser, handcuffs... to utter disregard for a Pet's life. Where are they now? Same answer. Some are trying desperately to find their animals, but with over 14,000 listed on Petfinder.com, that task is daunting even for the most computer-savvy. Some simply don't care enough to look. It runs the full spectrum.

Believe me, I have plenty of disdain for the owners who are not looking for their pets. But I know many of them are still in shelters themselves and/or aren't computer savvy or don't know about Petfinder.com, etc.

(None of that would stop ME from getting my pet out of there myself, however... but that's another issue entirely.)

The Humane Society of the US did alot of good down there. But like FEMA, they are a huge organization and it takes time to mobilize them. This need is URGENT. Sometimes, the best way to accomplish things is through grass-roots efforts by motivated individuals, not through large bureaucratic organizations. This is one of those times.

I'm not clear on what the "organization" is where this situation is occurring. It's a dog rescue place, but whether it specializes in Pits or not, I don't know, but there are plenty of other breeds there.

Many Pit Bulls were sent there after Katrina because so many shelters around the country would not or could not accept Pit Bulls, or they couldn't accept enough (due to the high percentage of Pits rescued from Katrina). Shelters know what they can adopt out, and if they don't have a good adoption rate for Pit Bulls, it would be a death sentence for them to accept Katrina Pit Bulls. So let's not judge the shelters for not accepting them... they may have saved their lives by NOT accepting them.

However, that meant a high number of Pits were "left over" with no shelters to take them... and that's part of why this organization was sent dogs... there simply weren't enough options and not enough time and not enough volunteers available to explore all possible options.

I love grassroots operations, God bless them, but if we can be realistic, that is what got these dogs into this mess. People with good intentions and no organization to follow through.
