(Vanity) Walmart $378 Laptop - HP ze2308wm, good deal?
Posted on 11/24/2005 7:12:37 PM PST by narses
My local Walmart is advertising a HP Pavillion ze2308wm for $378. Is this a decent laptop? I've never had a laptop before and when I travel it would be useful. Opinions please.

If it's the one I think it is you have to be one of the first 50 people there at 5:00 am.
The clientele at my nearby Walmart is such that I'd be afraid of getting stabbed in the rush.
I know Dell has one almost that price after the rebate.

Yes it seems to be a decent machine and will do everything that the average user needs. Get a carrying case to hold all the little odds and ends that you'll eventually accumulate.
Also think about buying a mouse to go with it. You can choose the compact "travel" style or a full size desktop model, but you'll probably want wireless for ease of use when traveling.
I could'nt tell from the ad if it had built-in wireless networking or if it was optional. That would be a must-have for travel - espcially in many of the airports. Atlanta has free wireless everywhere.
Get there early.

They are, however, fragile. Handle with care, and they'll take care of you too.

Some amazing deals on electronic equipment tomorrow by many retailers.
If I wanted to fight all the hyperactive shoppers, and take the risk of possibly getting trampled to death, it might be worth it to try and cash in on some of these deals.
But I think I will sleep-in instead and let the loonies go at it. The news should be interesting tomorrow evening!

Circut City has a Toshiba laptop for $199 tomorrow. Even comes with a free wireless G-router and all-in-one printer.
Problem is you have to sign up with AOL for a year to get the deal. So it ends up being over $400.

Walmart is TERRIBLE for the US. Screw them!! Is Walmart terrible because it's cheaper to manufacture a good, ship it to the US, and STILL have it be cheaper than a US made good?
I think it's easy to blame Walmart - but they're operating in a free market in which the US is becoming less competitive for a number of reasons.

They are, however, fragile. Handle with care...My daughter got snagged on the power cord to my Apple PowerBook G4 and pulled it onto the floor from the desk. It cost over $1,000 to repair it. I couldn't believe it. I love having a laptop, but kstewkis is right -- be very careful. Of course, at $400, it's cheaper to buy a new one than pay for a $1,000 repair.

"I have my eye on their 42-inch Plasma television for $997 "
WARNING: Be aware that this Viore model is apparently only capable of EDTV and not true HDTV resolutions, although it has a built in HDTV-compatible ATSC tuner to display the HD broadcasts. Do not be confused by the fact that Walmart and Sam's were selling a true HDTV Viore monitor in the very recent past. It is not the same model and so you are not necessarily getting a great deal unless you by some fluke get the older model by mistake (it won't have a tuner though). The Viore does have a good quality screen as plasma screens go. Contrast is not great and it will burn in if you are not careful, but neither is it total crap either and so not a bad screen for the money. I have heard that the Viore tends to not have a long lifetime though, so you get what you pay for. They are actually made by Akai.

Walmart is terrible for the US because it has infected the minds of crazed freepers into a fervor.
They lurk in the forum like hawks on fence-posts.. waiting to swoop in on the hapless victim with the troll words.., they even smell a troll thru the ethernet, and then knowingly ping all their buddies in for the festival.. of trolls /sarc>

It has a mobile Sempron (value AMD cpu like the Intel Celeron and not a speed demon or good for cpu intensive apps) and only 256MB ram, that's barely enough to run XP and another app considering that the onboard graphics will eat up 32MB to 64MB of that. For the price you get what you pay for and while it's cheap if it doesn't do what you want it's worth zero. If you can live with long load times, don't run games, open big spreadsheets or use photoshop like apps and only need it for word processing and light browsing it might get you by otherwise you'll be pulling your hair out. You can get better for a little more and be happier

If you guys don't mind, Ill go ahead and post his talking points for him.
They just sell cheap chinese crap.. CHICOMS! RED CHINA! ..never mind the fact that every other retailer sells the exact same product
They pay their workers crap wages! ..Cashiers and shelf stockers should be paid $50,000 a year. I feel very stupid for getting a college degree. I should have gotten a job stocking DVDs.
They put mom & pop stores out of business! ..Ah yes, Mom&Pop stores. No longer can Mom&Pop stores have a 200% markup on their products while paying their employees minimum wage with no benefits. You will note this in no way contradicts point #2.
To: staytrue
After all, you do get what you pay for (and you won't see me camping out at the local Wal-Mart tommorrow morning).
