NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees grabbed center fielder Johnny Damon away from the rival Boston Red Sox, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday night on a $52 million, four-year contract.

This just feels wrong. Exactly why I prefer college sports. You don't see any UNC players go to Duke, or any stars from Miami tranfering to Florida State. Hard to go from being someones biggest fan to having to hate him the next year.
I'm glad they are taking this showboater and his "Queer Eye" act out of town. The Yanks can have him.
This sucks. My wife and kids are unhappy with this move.

Besides, I think Damon is a standup guy, and as far as a Boston player goes, he's engaged in a minimum of trash talk about the Yanks. If you asked a typical Yankee fan which Red Sox player they liked/respected, Damon and Wakefield would be the ones most Yankee fans would pick.

Exactly. The teams are too fluid. Back in the day teams would stick together largely intact for years and you could really learn to love them. Like the old Lakers-Celtics rivarly. It really is hard to have a good rivarly with as much turnover as their is today. Kinda hard to cheer for a star player when you know there is a 50% chance that he is gone next year, and a guy from a rival club that you've been trained to hate for a decade is going to take his spot. In college they may graduate, but at least your rock won't be on a rival squad and you won't have to be rooting for some punk kid from your rival.
The Yankees no long hair policy will take away Damon's whole appeal. Of course, he'll still be the best lead-off hitter in the American League.

As a Yankee fan I never liked seeing Damon at the plate. As the father in law of two diehard Red Sox fans I can only smile.
Oh man... the Yanks are getting two of our classy guys... Johnny Damon and pitcher Mike Myers. (The Yanks can keep Alan Embree...LOL) And another one of my faves Bill Mueller (aka "Billy Ballgame") goes to the Dodgers. Maybe I should go back to being a baseball nonfan... :-(
Oh, in my previous post I forgot Mark Bellhorn... the Yanks can keep him too for all I care! ;-D
