Brokeback Mountain Claims Big Four At The Golden Globes

Critically-acclaimed western Brokeback Mountain cleaned up at the Golden Globe Awards last night by claiming four top honors.

The controversial film, which has been banned from some cinemas for its gay themes, took home Best Movie (Drama), Best Screenplay and Best Song prizes at the 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards, while Ang Lee picked up the night's Best Director honor from his hero Clint Eastwood.

And there were triple celebrations for Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line when Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix claimed the acting honors in the Comedy/Musical movie category and the film picked up the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) prize.

The win cost Phoenix dear, however - he bet Witherspoon's husband Ryan Phillippe he wouldn't win a Golden Globe. The Crash star demanded payment as his pal took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Meanwhile, there was a big upset for the stars of Desperate Housewives during the night's TV awards - all four Best Actress nominees from the show lost out to Mary Louise Parker, who plays a marijuana-selling desperate housewife on cable show Weeds.

But the stars of the hit show didn't miss out on a Best TV Show award - they scooped the coveted prize from Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, My Name is Earl, Entourage and Everybody Hates Chris - and the show's Felicity Huffman claimed the night's Best Actress (Drama) movie award for her role as a transgender man in Transamerica.

The big TV winner was acclaimed mini-series Empire Falls, which claimed two honors - Best Actor (Paul Neuman) and Best Miniseries/TV Movie.

The full list of awards is:

Movie Awards Best Score: John Williams MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Best Original Song: A Love that Will Never Grow Old by Emmylou Harris, Bernie Taupin and Gustavo Santaolalla -Brokeback Mountain

Best Movie (Comedy/Musical): Walk the Line

Best Movie (Drama):

TV Awards

Best Mini-series or TV Movie: Empire Falls

Best TV Series (Movie/Comedy): Desperate Housewives

Best TV Series (Drama): Lost

Cecil B Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement: Sir Anthony Hopkins

This entire thread, I started and read, no one wrote, I F'ing hate those fags or anything of the sort. The comments have been about the decline of ideals, the hollywood mindset, the decay of morality, the propensity for people to see themselves as forward thinkers and special because they are so accepting. If there is an instance of a "hate" word, I apologize b/c I did not see it.

No one said anything about censorship. Just make it known to people that many sects of this society have agendas. I noticed the "homosexual" agenda when I was in HS about 8-9 years ago. It upset me then and it still does.

So when posts of this nature show up, its not to cast stones at gay people. Its to open the eyes of people who may not have noticed the subtle changes that have occurred. see http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/730694/posts

For the millionth time, the film is being billed as an "American Love Story". That is BS, its a sex story. The first scene from my understanding, is assuredly sodomy and possibly bordering on rape. They then follow with years of sexual encounters up on the mount. that has little to nothing to do with love.

As far as the acting goes, if the previews are any indication, they lend themselves to the fact that the movie is about a legitimate western family in love, (very veiled info about the gay aspect) and the acting I see is not special at all. Heath Ledger is getting accolades by the boatload because of his quiet repressed mannerisms, but that to me is nothing special.

Heres how you do it, watch your son or daughter when they are in trouble and embarrassed. also, widen your smile with thin lips and look distraught.

Hooray!! You win an oscar- but only if you also sodomize someone in the process.

its sickening, and everyone has the right, and more importantly, the duty to comment on things that they see as a step in the wrong direction.

I was interested in the answers I would get. It didn't "bother" me - nothing on these threads does, really - but it's just interesting that people get so exercised about a MOVIE. :)

Tell that to your liberal comrades who did everything they could to kill The Passion, whined incessantly about it when it became a HUGE hit (unlike your fave fag flick), then shut it out at Oscar time.

Movies have messages and affect cultural morality, and you libs know it. That's why your Hollywood friends try so hard to push their agendas down out throat.

When I read your post, I have to wonder how you came up with your screen name. Nothing I said can be construed as "liberal", just common sense.

i didnt watch the globes, wont watch the oscars. I find it terribly annoying that my friends are so interested in the lives of the hollywoodians, but thats there thing. I'm not gonna talk about what JLo was wearing, cuz I dont think its important. I do, however, think it is paramount that we express our disdain for the content of the trash that is produced.

Free speech/expression is still protected on both sides.

Regarding "Buttcrack Mountin":

Excerpts from Current Communist Goals as read into the Congressional Record in January, 1963 by Democrat Congressman H. S. Herlong of Florida:

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

You big silly - NARNIA didn't appeal to the elite group of critics who nominate the films. If C.S. Lewis had written about children coming of age sexually and exploring their homo-erotic notions in an allegorical world - then it would have got the big awards. But as it is, the film was just too decent and it told too nice of a story (the kind where evil loses) for the bath-house boys to appreciate.

It sad to see that a movie about 2 guys sodomizing each other and one about a preop transexual are the most "amazing" films of the year

But it is actually good, in a way. They spend so much time trying to villainize those of us on the right in the battle for the soul of mushy middle America. But we don't hardly have to say a thing about them -- they villainize themselves.

I hate to bring up my mother and father's divorce, but after they split up, a day didn't pass that my mother didn't rail on how much she hated my father. My father never said an unkind word about her -- mostly he didn't talk about her at all with us. Guess who's side I was most attracted to?

The Golden Globes voting major awards to Brokeback Mountain is like the Democrat Caucus voting Nancy Pelosi in as Minority Leader in the House. Both are extreme versions of the voters' culture.

Writers of bbm, short story writer included, dont even compare to CS Lewis.

Maybe if Sir Thomnas had tried to mate with the beaver and the fox at the same time, they could have won something.

Narnia was a great movie.

It should be noted that the Globe awards are given based on the voting of just 80 foreign correspondents. And they apparently love gay sheepherders...

If it was not about the act of performing sodomy on one another they WOULD NOT be in lust, how many guys have male friendships, go out ropin, drinking and sit around a campfire talking, all of a sudden become so smitten with one another that they end up in the tent?

I believe that this homosexualized view of male friendship is why most of us guys have far fewer and more superficial male friends than our fathers would have. It's less and less acceptable to talk about anything but sports and conquests than it was.

Men used to hang out nude in the sauna, shower, camping... it was acceptable. It had nothing to do with sex. Now it just isn't done. They still do it at the YMCA, and let me tell you, I was covered with a towel at all times and I was out of there as fast as I could go and didn't want to go back, because it just isn't done. I'm still not sure they aren't a bunch of homos because of that song and everything.

I suppose homophobia isn't about being afraid OF homosexuals, or being homosexual oneself, it's the fear of being BRANDED homosexual that has us all running in circles. And why not? It's a disgusting, devastating lifestyle that leaves nothing but death and destruction in its wake. The damn movie even demonstrates this, but nobody seems to notice that part.

I agree! which is so unfortunate and also does not transend to the female population, as women we have always been able to have friendships that are intimate but not sexual and so many more women have friends than a straight man can have without be pinged queer.

Nice post. There is very little dedicated to the destruction of the families in the movie.

Also, it used to be fine when I was younger to stay at a friends house and sleep in the same bed, after all, you are just sleeping, but now one stops to think about it before its done. Say you go on a trip with 4 friends, you get a room w/2 beds, it is still wierd but you share the 2 beds w/2 guys on each. You have that safety b/c there are the other 2 in the room on the other bed, nothings going on. But would you dare get a hotel room with 1 bed and 2 men? with no one there to verify that no funny business went on?

I go on business trips with my brother in law and we wouldnt do that.

there is a stigma to all that stuff. In response, like you say, the number of quality friends with which you have emotional/spiritual ties to, have dwindled.

About the whole concept, that many people seem to miss. The awards are given for ACTING. It is probably not easy to realistically portray a character not yourself. Case in point: Felicity Huffman as a transsexual man. If you pull it off, you are considered a good actor.

Uhhhhhhh....I think its always been a little more complicated than that. To suggest a film's context and a host of external cultural factors are not at play when voting takes place is naive. OTOH, I think you are only suggesting something patently simplistic so you can ride a high horse. Contrary to what you say, I think many here are NOT "missing the concept."

Do you want Big Brother to step in and regulate content? Better think twice about that one.

Do you always set up straw man arguments and knock them down with an air of condescension?
